Seems to me CART had some pretty good races at Michigan also!!!

Can I get a HELL-YES on that?

I refuse to watch IRL races on TV, mostly because I'm so sick of all the
sponser name dropping the announcers do. The other networks are bad, but
ABC is the worst! Case in point, I believe it was at the Nazareth race
earlier this year, and it started to rain. ABC sent one of their
trackside announcers to the "Marlboro Team Penske" pit to talk to Mr.
Penske. The announcer opened his spot by noting that "Roger Penske is
wearing his Hugo Boss Raingear", or words to that effect. There was a
reference made to Hugo Boss, that I remember. WTF is that all about?

Bottom line...I do like to watch the close racing in IRL, but you know
what? I'm sick of ovals! NASCAR already has that covered. I want to see
those cars on street courses and road courses also. Oh wait, CART still
does that!

I love CART, to me the best open wheel racing series in existance. I
don't have Speed Channel, so I don't get to see all the races, but the
ones that are televised on CBS, I watch. I hope CART survives this and
comes out on top, but I think both CART and IRL are destined for
failure. Like I said, NASCAR already has the oval racing thing covered.
What made the old pre-IRL/CART split special, was the mix of tracks...
IMHO. Oh, my interest in either form of openwheel racing has NOTHING to
do with driver nationality. (Go Paul Tracy!!!)

I'm jumping off my soapbox now. Thanks for listening.

I don't know did you see the end of the IRL race? 3 and 4 wide swaping spots
lap after lap. I really don't like watching road course racing unless I'm in
need of a nap. Besides that wasn't even on TV over here.

When I watched Indy Lights from the grandstands at Fontana two years
ago, the whole pack was together, three and four wide swapping places
all the time. Cars out of horsepower with still a lot of downforce to
go tend to do that...

You don't need alot of HP to have a good race. Take F1 for example. They
have alot of HP but there isn't much racing after the first corner.

Sorry but there is more to racing then draft passes.  I guess with the
increased popularity of NASCAR it is coming down to that.  Buy your ticket
sit in you numbered seat and watch the cars go round and round and think all
the pushing, shoving and draft passing is racing.

The NASCAR drivers and crew do that all the time, too.  I've learned to just
ignore all the sponsors...

And watching a bunch of cars play follow the leader is? At least at a parade
you get clowns and Shriners. =)

Hell yeah

Really? When do you get three and four wide at 180mph plus on a road/street
course with out having cars being carried away on flat beds?  Ovals are
popular because they are exciting to watch. While as a sim racer I can
appreciate what it takes to run a god road race, but that still doesn't make
them any less boring to watch.

My beef is that the announcers do it.

Whilst I agree that bame dropping of sponsors is not ideal at the moment we
have to face facts. Companies do not have vast amounts of money to throw at
motor racing at the moment. Those that are supporting the sport through
sponsorship in these difficult economic times deserve to get value for their
money. I think we have to be a bit more tolerant of this for the moment and
hope that when things pick up the name dropping will reduce a bit.

and IRL are destined for failure. Like I said, NASCAR already has the oval
racing thing covered. What made the old pre-IRL/CART split special, was the
mix of tracks...>>>

The way they're going now, I think you're right.  IRL talked about racing on
the cheap with All-American drivers, couldn't do it.  CART was the class of
the continent in open-wheel, now it's an 18-car field.

They'll rejoin just before they die, so let's take the best ideas from both:
- cheap standard engines and chassis, let's make it a driver's race instead
of manufacturer's;
- half-and-half ovals and road courses to reward the complete driver (just
lose the street circuits where you can't pass);

then add two of my best ideas <g>:
- lose the aero, make them actually drive the car and slow for turns;
- run 43 car fields (except at Indy;-)
