I'll be honest and say I'm not such a huge fan of rallying that I knew
much about Richard Burns before the sim bearing his name came out. But
it's still very sad that such a talented driver should die so young.

So long Richard, and thanks for putting your name to one of the best sims
ever.

This came as a shock to me, as though not unexpected, there was no recent
news about a deterioration in his condition.

Many of us in the sim community are very apprceciate to Richard for
realising his belief that that realism rather than an appeal to the mass
market could bring true rally fans closer to experiencing his love for the
sport.

The development of Richard Burns Rally also gave Richard a focus and goal
during his medical battle.

Thanks for the ride!

Tim

RICHARD BURNS

It is with very great sadness that we must announce the death of Richard
Burns, the 2001 FIA World Rally Champion. Burns, who was diagnosed with an
astrocytoma, a form of brain tumour, in November 2003 passed away last night
Friday 25th November peacefully.  His partner Zoe, family and close friends
were at his bedside.

From the outset Richard knew that the odds were heavily against him and yet
he fought his illness with bravery and good humour.  Having undergone both
chemotherapy and radiotherapy he was able to leave hospital in summer 2004.
For a while his health showed signs of improvement but then after six months
it once again began to decline.  Determined not to give up, he opted for
surgery earlier this year.  This alleviated some of the symptoms of his
illness and enabled him to remain active.  At Castle Combe in August he
attended a parade of the rally cars that he drove throughout his career and
was touched by the warmth of the reception he received. However there was to
be no miracle and in recent days he lapsed into a coma.

The media, friends and fans are asked to respect the family's privacy at
this time. There will be a private funeral and instead of flowers the family
would ask that donations be sent to Cancer Research. Anyone who would like
to send messages should address them to the memorials pages on this website.

The date of a memorial service will be announced shortly.

I knew his chances of a full recovery were pretty slim, but I never expected
him to lose the fight with cancer quite this quickly. Sad news...

RIP Richard.

I became a fan of WRC back around 1999 or so when I first had access to
SPEED Channel.  I became a fan of Richards when he drove for Subaru up
until the 2001 season.  You always hope for a miracle.....

Very sad indeed. He'll be remembered by many through the great game he
helped create for a long time if great games like GPL are anything to
judge valuable, quality games by.

Very sad news.

The Richard Burns Rally game is indeed a fine sim.

I think that what is utterly tragic is the circumstance in which he died.

We tend to accept professional drivers cheating death (often exceeding their
nine lives) and going out in what they would probably agree would be the
preferred manner, behind the wheel of their machine.
I am reminded of the sentiments of Denny Hulme's family, one of whom said,
after Denny had a heart attack at Mount Panorama (Bathurst), that that was
exactly how he should depart...behind the wheel of a racing car, during a
race, and without any harm coming to anyone else. A most fitting end to a
professional driver.

But there is something desperately wrong and so unfair when one such as
Richard Burns has his life cut short through such an insidious and ghastly
medium as a brain tumour.

My condolences to his family and friends.

what saddens me more is that Richard died from a terrible illness which in
one way or another can touch everyone yet at the same time george best dies
from a self inflicted disease and gets all the coverage. i just wish that
some newspapers gave more column inches to the person that was more
deserving and not goin with the flow. really winds me up that genuine
talent is overlooked in favour of `personality` when it comes to media
coverage.
my thoughts are with the Burns family and i give them my best wishes for
the future.

George Best was a personality before Richard Burns was even thought of and
was a high-profile participant in the world's most-watched sport.
Don't blame Best or the media for the fact that his death received more
coverage than did Burns'.
Just take comfort in the fact that both of them have received far more
coverage than what you and I will receive when we go out the door!

Best was a real, and very talented star at a time when it was far harder
to be a celebrity. These days fame is available 24/7 on a thousand reality
TV channels globally, and means much less.

I was never really a big football fan, and I think Best was probably a
waste of a good liver, however I can't help but like a man who can say:

"I spent a lot of money on booze, birds and fast cars. The rest I just
squandered"

As long as RBR runs on my current *** rig, he'll have a place there
as one of the two blokes standing in front of that blue Subaru. Sorry to
hear he passed away at such a young age.
