GTR 2002 - Wow!

Only had the time for a few laps in GTR 2002 tonight, but already I am
very impressed.  I tried the NGT class 996 GT3 at Brands Hatch, and then
the GT class 996 Turbo at Spa.  I was really impressed with the feel.
Feels even better than FIA V3 did.  Amazing thing is it also felt much
more controllable than V3 did.  I had a few spins at Brands but mostly
due to lack of familiarity with the course.  Spa felt great.  You can
definitely balance the cars on the throttle through the turns using
Arnao's setups.  I think the most significant improvement since V3
though is just the fact that there are some real sports car tracks now,
i.e. fewer chicanes and low speed crap.  I hated driving the FIA cars on
the F1 tracks.  Anyway I am looking forward to having the time to get a
little deeper into it.  Definitely worth the 12 hr. download!

I'm digging the Ferrari 360 Modena.  It's fast but not so hard to handle - and
nice looking!

I love the way the Porsche gt2 sounds, but the Lamborghini kicks ass!

I love the 996 Turbo. But then I love it in real life.... Just remember to
short-shift until the car is settled out of the turns or the turbo will kick
you all over the place ;-).

The Lambo seems to me to be the easiest to drive, but I haven't tried the
ugly cars yet...

Turbo lag = traction control.  Seriously, I found it fairly easy to time
it so that the power came up on the exit and not before.  Whereas with
most of the other GT cars so far I am still having a bit of a problem
with the low speed turns.  I think I will be sticking with the Porsche
for now.  ;o)

I'm finding Doug's setups to be a bit understeery.  Maybe it's because of
the huge rear wings on these 2002 cars.  Maybe he made them that way so the
noobs weren't put off.  In any case, I'm going to be doing plenty of
tinkering with setups in this mod.  It's certainly worthy of the effort.

Oddly, I've found the Lambo the easiest to drive.

And man does that puppy scream down the straights!

I haven't tried the Lambo yet.  In the GT cars I tried the Porsche, the
550, the Viper, and the Marcos, and in that group the Porsche seemed
like the easiest to drive.  Hmm, guess I will have to spend an hour or
five and try the Lambo tonight.  ;o)

Depending on the car a little bit of understeer is not a bad thing.  The
idea is to balance the throttle against it on the turn exit.  I'm sure
you have seen videos of Porsche Turbos being driven around a corner on
power oversteer.  That's what I am talking about, but you need to start
with a little understeer if you want to really be able to lay into the
power oversteer in a controllable manner.  You cannot balance it all out
with dampers because the corner exit phase lasts too long.  They even do
this in F1 - if you can get a good clip of an F1 car powering out of a
slow corner you will usually be able to tell visually that there is
almost no weight on the inside front wheel.  That's due to a very high
roll couple, which means a car that will be very tight if you are not
aggressive enough on the throttle.  This is also common in NASCAR.
Anyway I am pretty sure that is what Doug is trying to achieve, all of
his setups that I have tried seem to be biased towards very aggressive
throttle usage.
