Driver problem with Nascar 2003 and radeon 9700

by Don » Sat, 07 Feb 2004 14:11:35

I reformatted and was able to get N2003 up and running again just fine.  Was
connecting online fine.  Then something happened and when I tried run N2003
my computer would reboot.  The message from Microsoft was serious driver
error.  I uninstalled Logitech software, N2003 and ATI drivers and
reinstalled.  Basically the same problem after getting to the screen that
has the version listed on the bottom the screen would go black and I would
get a reboot.   No virus and all other programs seem to be running well.
GPL is fine.
I was going to try an Omega driver but XP puts the driver in that it wants
to.  It shows no conflicts with the driver it uses.
I think maybe my registry is screwed up and add/remove programs is not
completely removing my video drivers, but I am not to sure how to fix that
short of another reformat.

Nothing is screwed up at all,you are just a novice panicking.

The answer is simple you have to install the Ati driver correctly.

The alarming point is you freely explain how easy it is to reformat
everything at the drop of a hat but you are unable to do the simple task of
making XP use the graphic driver you want.

My advice is to read the simple How To's in depth they might help you move
from floundering novice to competent beginner.

Also try your sound card drivers. All the problems I've had where I thought
the video card drivers were the culprit.... turned out to be the sound card
drivers instead.... of course I do have a Creative card too.....

Dan....i was referring to the how to instructions that come with most
software that people do not follow properly because they have a 'better' way
by force of habit

I have watched many customers do things that had become 2nd nature but were
in actual fact wrongly done.

The original post showed a definite error in the Ati driver installation
where he referred to wanting to install driver A but XP which does as it
pleases and he cant stop it,installed driver B.

If he had read how to uninstall and install drivers to the letter, that would
not have happened.

Dan if i can be of any help just ask.

Thanks AD. The new box reboots when trying to run NR2003 and I *think* it's a
cable modem issue. I'll find out later today when the cable guy comes but I
also suspect that I may have to re-install the card because the log states that
it is a driver issue. Thanks for the help offer...I may just take you up on it
:)

I may have left out some details.  The format was not "at the drop of a hat'
and was painful.  I did have N2003 running fine with the same ATI driver
that XP is reinstalling when I remove the old driver.  I could install the
omega driver over the top of the other driver but all instructions that I
have seen say to first remove the old driver.
I do not think that there is any thing wrong with the ATI driver that XP is
installing.  Maybe Add/remove programs does not completely remove all of the
previous driver installation?
AD if you have a link that contains good instructions on removal and
installation of ATI drivers, would you share that with me.

AD,
I found an error message that may give a clue to solving my problem.  If I go to Component Services\Console Root\Event Viewer(Local)\System\warning   Window File Protection
The protected system file c:\windows\system32\drivers\ati2mtag.sys could not be verified as valid because Windows File Protection is terminating. Use the SFC utility to verify the integrity of the file at a later time.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.Microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

Just found this so I may try to get some help from the link included.

Try ATI's uninstaller program. You can find it at their site under utilities
(I think it's at the bottom of the page where you download the drivers).
Just run it and it will get rid of all the ATI stuff. Reboot and let winxp
do it's thing. If winxp installs drivers by itself, then try n2k3 with those
and see if it will run. If so then just install Omega's and hope everything
still works.

Don ....please use a utility like Driver Cleaner 2 , and it will leave your pc Ati (and Nvidia if needed) free before your attempt with the Omega drivers.

Also from my experience with the ATI omega drivers is you just need to make sure the ATI control panel is removed first, the drivers will be overwritten by the omega drivers.  The omega drivers include their own control panel so that is why you need to remove the ATI control panel first.  Also like others have said use the uninstall utilility from ATI to do a complete clean (good idea).  I run a W98SE and Radeon 9200 and play around with drivers for best FPS.  Hope some of this helps

Driver problem with Nascar 2003 and radeon 9700

by Don » Mon, 09 Feb 2004 23:33:12

I was able to able to use the ATI removal program along with Driver Cleaner
2 to remove and reinstall my video drivers.  Driver Cleaner 2 had very good
instructions with it.  The cancel button worked when XP wanted to install
drivers of it's choice.  That cancel button would not work before.  Bottom
line is that the Omega driver has some error protection built in so now I
just get bounced to the desktop instead of a reboot when attempting to run
N2003.
I would like to thank all of you who helped me.

I gave up and reformatted my harddrive and reinstalled XP.  Nascar 2003
works now.
