Here we are: I'm pleased to see I had a proper newsreader even then,
though X-Stream as an ISP isn't something to look back on all that
fondly...

According to the Gameplay site at:

http://www.racesimcentral.net/

the budget release of GPL on the Sierra Original label (which it
says happened on Friday) only costs ten quid (about USD16). Very
reasonable.

The site also says: "believe us when we say that it'll take a bit of
practice". You could say that...

We can all afford an emergency 'scratched CD backup' now - I'm off
to get mine on Monday!

Wow, I can't remember having a a mail account with those guys, that

account, but they were our ISP back then so it sounds like it's me.....I
gotta go look now

Btw, there was a huge row over that ISP, they called themselves Internet
Norge (Norway) and secured the domain internet.no, had they not went
banrupt before the dotcom craze I'm sure they would have made a small
fortune, but when they went belly up that domain name was put on the
restricted list by Norid I belive

That was my buddy JoHS using my computer as his was down with a BIOS
problem, still remember that one, ASUS wanted in the region of 100
dollars to replace his faulty BIOS (including shipping) and a new board
was something like 125-150.....:-)

Ah, those were the times, Soundblaster PRO and Gravis UltraSound, and
Diamond Stealth video cards with VRAM, if memory serves me right he had
the 2 MB upgrade kit on it as well, all I could afford at the time was
the 2MB card with DRAM, but I had a P120 :-)

Well, that was an interesting exercise, brought back lots of memories of
trying to get GPL to run.........got 38 replies to my original query, too,
many from names I still see here regularly. Thanks for then, and thanks for
keeping r.a.s. the place it is for simracers.
PS I kinda like my old sig line.......

Hi folks, i have just installed GPL for the third time this week, since it
stopped working after loading OpenGL files to my GPL folder......after
loading OpenGL and adjusting the settings in core.ini, i played for awhile
and shut down.....after restart, I could not get game to run....illegal
operation.......invalid page fault....blah blah blah....but a r.a.s. post
advised me to change display setting from 256 to 16 bit...which I did, and
the game started, but all commands executed slooowwllyyy, and when I finally
saw the trainer sitting on pit road, i selected first gear and stabbed the
pedal..car sat in pits, while I heard the sound of a car squealing away and
crashing into the pit barriers....so, uninstall, reinstall, drive around
some, and wonder, what did I do wrong? I saved opengl before the uninstall,
so i can copy it in if I want....but does it really help? It didn't seem to
make a great deal of difference when I had it running...Any ideas?

Okay finally found it.  28 Aug 98...

-----

It might just be me, but the cars always felt like they were on ice to
me no matter what I did with setups.  It finally got so frustrating
that I just took the game off the HD.

Wait a second, that was the NEWEST one it listed...

The first one was 5 Oct 1994 (that seems more like it...)

GPLAP has that authentication feature, but I tried several months ago
to
get the code key so that I could use it in my GEnie league and Trev
declined.  Without that key, it really wouldn't serve any purpose...

   > 3.  Entry classes
I really think you should only have two classes -- regular and outlaw.
The first requires 716hp, no chicane jumping, etc, while the latter is
anything goes.  However, CIS used to do this and the outlaw class just
faded away after a couple months.  IMHO, creative cheating is not
nearly
so satisfying as turning a quick, legal lap.
(And I should say at this point that I am the first one who reported
the
discovery that you can cut across from Variante Bassa to Traguardo at
Imola... :)  It saves about 6 seconds...)

It's fascinating to read back through these old notes and remember the
folks who were around then -- Doug Reichley, who was the first "alien"
I ever knew, Trevor Kellaway, the master of F1GP utilities, and back
then, Brian Wong, who now runs GPL Rank, was my teammate in
Kattywumpus Motorsports.

Pretty cool thread, did some searching on dejanews and came up with this, which I believe was my first post on this forum back in Sept 97. Interestingly enough, it was on 9/11/97.

This was a response to a post by Aaron in regards to the rendition video card.

I recently upgraded to a Dell Dimension XPS 233 mmx system with 32 mb
sdram. I took the Sierra rendition card out of my old system (p90) and put
it in my new system. My frame rate is very smooth in win95. While it was
good in my PB p-90 with the rendition card, I got pauses in the turns in
win95. On this new system, there are no pauses. I have set the min frame
rate to 30 fps and run with all graphics on, and they all stayed on.
If your getting pauses, try running it in rendition with the -4 command
switch. This forces the system to load 4 bit textures instead of 8 bit
textures. I believe you have to have the patch installed in order  to use
the -4 switch. Just start the sim with the "renddma -4" command. This
should alleviate your pauses. I don't have any problem running it without
the -4 command.
