EVERYBODY READ THIS IMPORTANT,

I think Sierra is controling this Newsgroup.  She deletes Post that she

not real because ther's a problem here!!!  The Blue ribbon speech could
make a good paper for this.  Anyway who's in charge ofd this

LOL, talk about memories.  My first in RAS was November of '97.  I was
helping a guy who couldn't get his carset to load in N1. (!!)

Heres what ya need to do.  Visit the pits.  Http://www.theuspits.com/
Go to the Workshop, go to the archives, click Nascar1 and scroll down
until you see Jed's Nascar car set converter.  You probably got the
european version like I did, and the US car sets won't load into the
garage until you convert them.  Hope this helps.

Earliest one I can find... I changed accounts quite often.  As an aside, my
first USENET post was Oct 5, 1995 (according to Google).

July 02, 1999
I assume we're talking GTQ AI cars here...

Sardian uesd to***me off too. I went away and practised at Mosport,
geared my 911 kinda low, took most of the wing off and one day magically I
was faster than the AI cars. Went back to Sardian, qualified P1 and won by
40 sec (and I spun three times during the race) on the short race.

For me, the key to Sardian is the left sweeper/right hairpin combination
near the end of the lap. The AI cars are terrible through there. Keep it
floored in third for the left, shift to second, nail the brakes (buy ABS!),
sharp and early right turn then floor it. I was making up a few seconds per
lap on these corners.

This was on Medium AI difficulty.

Dale.

Mine was 97-ish I think and a rant about people getting in an uproar
about banning cigarette advertising in motorsports.

I think the only response was "uh, wrong newsgroup".

I'm not searching for it because it's embarassing.

Ugh ok, I didn't want to do this but I was curious to see how
embarassing it was.  Notice I've been kissing The Pits' ass for 6

As a ***-age smoker and underrage drinker, I would like to say that I
honestly don't care one way or the other about the ban of
cigarettes/*** from sporting events.  However, there are a few
points that I would like to see people consider (from both sides):

1. Winston cigarettes are manufactured by RJR-Nabisco correct??  This
is a HUGE corporation, which owns many businesses that are not related
to ***/tobacco.  Since it's a corporation, all of the assets of
the individual businesses are considered assets of the corp.; to make
a long story short, it shouldn't be all that difficult for RJR-N to
advertise a different product instead of tobacco/*** -- for
example, the drivers could race for the Nabisco Cup (I realize that it
doesn't sound the same, of course, but if you think about it, it
doesn't sound any more absurd than naming the Cup after any other
product).

2. As far as teams being unable to compete without tobacco/***
sponsors, well, I have a ? for you all...name 1 ***ic beverage
that has EVER appeared on one of Richard Petty's cars (anwer: none).

3. Final point: RJR and other tobacco corpomonsters continuously say
things like "our adverti***ts aren't meant to lure people into
smoking."  OK, that makes sense.  Why else would a company advertise?
Because they feel that they're contributing to society?  Ha...

Sorry if this ruffles anyone's feathers.  I honestly brought these
points up to add facts (?) to these great discussions that we've been
having in regards to this proposed ban on cigarettes.

Oh, yeah...

4. My personal reactions to the "Let NASCAR make the rules rather than
the FDA" t-shirts:  So, basically what you're trying to say is that a
group of individuals who stand to make money from the involvement of
tobacco in motorsports should make decisions regarding that
involvement rather than an objective federal administration which has
nothing to gain or lose either way.  I guess this point could be
argued (I hope it is), but this is my personal reaction to that way of
thinking.

R.A.S. is great - i've been reading it for months...thanks a bundle to
john, tony, jan&jed and everyone else who volunteers to keep this
network of sim-support going...also to ed, adam, and charlie for
keeping us a*** on what's happening with yer sims

Hi all.  I've been lurking for some time, but now I have a Q for
you all...

What's the scoop on this game?  I have heard *zero* mention of it
here, so I *assume* it's doggie do-do, but I figured I'd check with
the experts.  I prefer realistic IndyCar sims and have experience with
ICR1, ICR2, NASCAR, and F1GP1.  Would it amuse me at all?

   Thanks for any info...

acceleration patch?  It's in beta, I just want to know if it works any
good and if it is worth risking any crashes (?).

I'm going to cheat a little - the following is my first **GPL-related** post
on RAS, dated March 10th, 1998:
-------
Asgeir,
I totally agree with everything you say..but - I think Papyrus' Grand Prix
Legends (July release) will be the answer to our
prayers.. To respond to your points:

1) > developers should listen to what we have to say!
- I have been monitoring various newsgroups such as this, and the forum at
the APEX GPL site at http://gpl.gamestats.com/ , and have been pleased to
see that one of the game's designers, Mike Lescault, participates in the
forum, answering questions and taking suggestions. Participants in the forum
have brought up points that they think Mike(and the other developers) should
know about (eg: someone questioned the accuracy of having six speed
gearboxes back in 1967/68. Mike checked into it, and told us that some of
the teams had them, some of them did not. Well, another participant
corrected him and told him for a fact that was incorrect. Mike wrote back to
say that although they could not correct this for the demo, the final
version will be corrected.) This is just of many points that have come up,
and that Mike has acknowledged. - Newsgroups are an excellent medium for
collecting gamer's views and ideas. (Now how about a game being developed
totally on the input of newsgroup members?!!)

2) > The end-users know what is required from a sim in order to have long
lasting fun (internet leagues , online/offline)
- GPL will have direct support for TCP/IP and IPX protocols. Furthermore,
multiplayer mode has been designed to virtually eliminate "warping", which
is a common problem with some games out there today.

3) > .. that Geoff(Crammond) and other writers have limited contact with the
internet community, at least it's not known that he has contact with us
- See above. Mike Lescault also wrote the following, on Mon Feb 16th:
"We read each and every suggestion that we receive, in addition to
monitoring r.a.s. and other newsgroups as well as other forums like this
one. Due to the amount of comments and suggestions we receive, we cannot
respond to each message. However, we definitely find the time to read
anything our customers take the time to write and send off to us."
- So they at least "claim" to be listening to us. I believe Mike because he
has taken the time to respond to numerous questions on the APEX forum. (But
just because they've read what we send them doesn't mean they're going to do
anything about it, does it?)

Like you said, Asgeir, the DEVELOPER has the wish for perfection, it is the
Publishing House that rushes the game out full of errors. Last year, Grand
Prix Legends was slated for a fall release (of '97), then got moved to
Christmas, then.. and now we are being told JULY. Of course, many of us
can't wait for the game to come out, but at the same time, everyone (to a
tee) has said "I would prefer to wait a couple of months to get a polished
game, than to go home today with a piece of crap." Of course, as the David
Kaemmer and Mike Lescault have both said many times, the game will never be
finished - there is always something extra that can be added, but is left
out due to time restraints.

To conclude, I think Grand Prix Legends will easily be the most realistic,
challenging, and fun simulation available. The physics model was started
from scratch, and the attention to detail that the guys at Papyrus have put
into the game is absolutely phenominal. This will be the answer to every sim
fan's dreams..

(Having said that, if you don't like classic F1, and you want to wait till
next winter, Nascar3 will use the same physics engine and will hopefully
include many of the ideas that were suggested to Papyrus but were too late
to include in GPL.) But I'm a real RACING fan(Nascar fans take that to mean
whatever you want!), and the glory days of Formula One is where it's at come
July.

Long Live Papyrus!!!

D.B.

Well, I've managed to get IndyCar to work with 4meg and a GUS using SBOS -o3
and the 1.02 patch for ICR.  However, I'm wondering if anyone has managed to
get this MegaEM Sound Blaster emulation that Gravis has distributed to work?
As far as Gravis's claims that the GUS sounds better than a SB go, I say
listen to MicroProse's World Circuit on a SoundBlaster and on a GUS running
SBOS and try to make that claim with a straight face.  The SoundBlaster
sounds
like the in-car video from ESPN... the GUS with SBOS sounds like a tin
whistle.

While I'm typing I'll offer my thoughts on some other posts.  I agree that
the
one negative aspect of WC is the inability to take different lines with
steering
help on, and the inablility to control the car with it switched off... I'm
in the
process of soldering together a wheel with 270 degrees of motion to
alleviate this
problem.  However, I DO like the fact that I can shut off all the
superfluous
texture mapping and run the game at 25 fps for an excellent "feel".  Next to
this
ICR's 15 fps max looks choppy.  I say Papyrus should let those of us who
don't
give a damn about sponsor decals really bump up the frame rate and DRIVE!!
