N2 Dos Networking woes revisited...(Update)

by Ron » Wed, 17 Sep 1997 04:00:00

Okay folks,
I am stumped. I have written Sierra tech describing
my problem also and am waiting for a response but it doesn't seem
totally confined now to N2. I previously posted how I could run N2 in
W95 and network successfully using my PCI "Network In a Box" setup by
linksys on a P166mmx and P100, which is still true. N2 in dos locks up
everytime on atleast one (sometimes both) systems upon connecting in
multiplayer. Now the strange thing is Quake works like a charm in Dos
with networking using the same ipx drivers and loading procedure. Just
to add to the confusion though, I downloaded the BigRed racing demo
since I noted it said it networked in Dos and got the same results as
N2 gives in Dos. Lockup upon connection to multiplayer/network. I also
tried BigRed in W95 and the networking worked just fine. Do these
racing games use a different protocol and/or configurable ipx speed
setting or something than quake if anyones aware? I am totally
stumped. Here's my setup I use to load the Dos drivers:

IPX.bat (Same on both systems)

loadhigh LSL
loadhigh LNEPCI2
loadhigh IPXODI
-------------------------------------------
Net.cfg (P166mmx)

Link Driver LNEPCI

      Port 6200
      Int 9
      Frame Ethernet_802.3
      Protocol IPX 0 Ethernet_802.3
-------------------------------------------
Net.cfg (P100)

Link Driver LNEPCI

      Port fce0
      Int 11
      Frame Ethernet_802.3
      Protocol IPX 0 Ethernet_802.3

Anyone have any ideas what I am doing wrong or what parameter(s),
ect.. I might add to allow these games to network in Dos?

Network Card Specs:
---------------------------
32-bit EtherPCI LAN Card II
NE2000-Compatible (Netware Only)
10BaseT & Thin coax ports -I'm setup with the Thin(BNC type)
Fully IEEE 802.3-Compliant
10 Megabits-per sec.
Boot Rom Socket for Netware remote....
Software Configurable - no jumpers or Switches
VLSI & SMT for Hardware Reliability
Ect...

Thanks,
Ron L.

Ron,

Just for giggles, let me know what your config.sys and
autoexec.bat read...I would be interested to know how
much conventional memory you've got when starting
the game.  (a copy of your mem-command would be
useful (from DOS) too: c:>mem /c > sysmem.txt)

N2 Dos Networking woes revisited...(Update)

I wrote Linksys support and promptly received a possible solution that

"Try replacing the "lnepci2.com" file that you are using w/ the one
from the netware/client/4.x/dos directory of the floppy diskette.  It
uses a different frame type required by certain games.  If this
doesn't work, you need to call the game manufacturer for more
information."

I hope this saves others some grief if you ever encounter such a
problem, make sure you try the above version file rather than the
default that may be in a /games folder on your network cards install
disk.

BTW, I don't even seem to have to do any special rebooting with the F8
to command prompt only. I simply tested by going straight into dos
selecting the (Exit windows - restart dos), then run my ipx.bat, load
n2. Worked like a charm!
