MS ForceFeed should I get it?

You must have misunderstood something. Yes, Win9x is indeed EOL. But it's
still the most compatible OS for games. New games support Win9x *and* XP.
Old games often won't run on anything *but* Win9x.

Thus, how can you claim Win9x supports less games than XP? It is a factually
wrong statement (unless you can cough up something very convincing). Your
comment on XP being even better than W2K when it comes to games shows you
really have misunderstood something. W2K was never meant for games. It was
meant for office and server use.

What XP has increased as opposed to 9x is stability. And the core technology
has gotten a much needed facelift, getting rid of the old legacy of MS-DOS
(supposedly, at any rate).

You need to re-read what I wrote.  I never said that XP supports more games
than 9x.  I said XP supports more games than 2K.

And I still say 9x is EOL and a dead-end operating system.  I've been
supporting that POS since the day it came out, and I for one am glad to see
it go the way of the Dodo.

And I think that the more people who use XP, the more the Game Developers
will be forced to get off their lazy butt's and start developing for XP, and
even issuing patches to their older, still selling games.

Hi Larry,

I could not agree more. It's about time people woke up and
collectively kicked Bill's orcish herds in the rear.

Just my 2c, of course. I've been a long time Linux Mandrake
user (slackware / redhat before that), and it's incredible what
Linux can do for you even on the desktop.

Regards,

uwe

Uwe,

The only place we differ is with our choice of alternate operating system.
I prefer MacOS X, but fully understand why Linux is appealing...

Again its old ancient hardware.

I cant stuff old cartridge cassettes into my CD player either.  Its called
progress.

Ive yet to find a game that doesnt work on XP and none of the hardware ive
got here fails to work.

Ive yet to find anything in my software collection of several hundred+
titles that ive failed to load on XP

XP will run old legacy style DOS software which winME etc wont (despite
being layered on top of MSDOS)

XP/2000 are based on NT not just fancy GUIs layered on top of MSDOS which
all 9x kernels are.

Increased stability, increased managment of resources, the ability to keep
the PC running without rebooting it several times a day and so on.

Surely there has GOT to be some

I also use my PC for development work, common tasks like word processing,
radio decoding as well as games along with the usual net applications.  My
PC is fast and stable - i can leave it on literally weeks at a time and not
have to reboot it.  If an errant app crashes it doesnt take down the rest of
the OS.  All these pretty vital for me.

Im the other way, have been using Linux as a server based OS for 7-8 years
now but have still yet to see it threaten to do anything of use as a desktop
OS for me.
Lack of software, fiddly configuration and setting up of programs, constant
worry about library versions, lack of standard look and feel along with lack
of a decent devlopment API means im keeping it as a house server (its
perfectly suited to this) but not as a desktop.

Thank you guys for all the advice. I still have some questions though:

1) I've read a post that said the MSFF had a precision problem under
high resolutions, specially GPL. Is that true?

2) Isn't there any new MSFF on the horizon? I would hate buying a FF
wheel and see a new version coming after just two months...

I've been running the MSFFW and GPL for 2 years and have had zero problems
with it.

As for whether there's anything new coming, who knows :)  Microsoft sells a
ton of these things from what I understand, so they probably aren't being
pushed too hard to invest engineering $$$ in it.

However, I would definitely like to see some of Bill's money spent on
updating the old, decripit SideWinder profiling software!

Ok, so I'm a Luddite - I'll admit it.  I just haven't seen anything from XP
that makes me want to run out and plunk down my money for it.  Then having to
spend more money to upgrade my hardware because XP doesn't like what I have.
Then spend 3 weeks getting it to work right.  Then finally giving up on some of
my games because they don't run anymore(or having to fart around with dual
boot)....

Eldred,

There's nothing wrong with NOT buying XP.  Speaking for my own posts
earlier, my only point is that XP does not suffer from the Anti-Game
attitude that NT and, to a lesser extent but still annoying, 2K does.

Sticking with Win9x is fine (well, for now of course).  Just make sure you
are staying for the right reasons :)

There are a lot of things about XP I DON'T like (add WMP to that list now
that Microsoft pulled another sleezy move with that latest 'critical'
update), including WPA, the lousy quality of the bundled software, the ugly
as hell Interface (I use Win2K Standard - I just can't stand that***pop
shit - It's no MacOS X, fer sure), etc...

But, I moved to it to explicity get _away_ from a dual-boot Win2K/98
scenario.

LOL!  And now I"m still dual-booting, only with two discreet installs of
WinXP.  One for general apps, and one for strictly ***.

Stability is not an issue with me.  ONce I get the various components
all working properly, (it took me months to square away the Nvidia card)  I
rarely have lockups.   Resource management?  I use enditall2 to squash most
resource hogs.  and running several days....ok that is an improvement.  I
CAN run the computer for weeks, but I also can lock it up if I start running
abunch of different programs...some are more touchy than others.
So I will give you that feature...but still, since I'm not much into 24
hour online racing(neat thought tho)  it doesn't effect my simming much.
I have far more problems with my cable connection stopping for no reason,
or my wife dloading something or my son and his 3 friends playing Warcraft3
allnight.

good points all.  I TRIED to write a book once using a computer...got
the whole plot line the characters, the backstory....but I never got very
far because I kept playing games....  :)  So I took all that business stuff
and wiped it out....made more room on the hardrive for games...  lol.

Well Steve, the leading edge is the bleeding edge as the saying
goes. Don't blame Linux for non-cooperative hardware
manufacturers.

All my nvidia cards (and v3 before that) work "wundervoll" both
in 2D and 3D.

Sorry to hear of your problems.
