TM Ferrari FF + XP - works, then uninstalls self

Having a weird problem with my Thrustmaster Ferrari FF wheel.  Running on
a freshly built XP box, the wheel works just fine - which seems to be an
uncommon thing based on what I've found through some searches.  If I
reboot though, the wheel is uninstalled!  All the files are still there,
but plugging in the wheel always results in the "New Hardware Found"
wizard being launched.

I've tried the 2.016 drivers that came with the wheel and the latest
drivers on Thrustmaster's site, but the result is always the same.
Windows at least has some clue that the wheel is installed, as now Windows
Update suggests I download the pedal patch for the Thrustmaster NASCAR Pro
Digital 2 Racing Wheel and Guillemot Race Leader Force Feedback Racing
Wheel.

Thankfully I'm not as *** of a racer as a lot of you, so I'm not
losing any fancy configurations when I have to reinstall.  Still, quite
annoying having to reinstall daily.  Any ideas?

Not sure if this applies to Win XP, but on my Win Me system I need to have
the Ferrari wheel plugged into a usb port and switched on before booting the
machine in order for Windows to find it reliably.

Looks like that does the trick for XP as well.  Bizarre.  I could sort of
understand it being installed but showing up as not connected, but
behaving as though it was never installed just doesn't make sense.  Never
had this problem in Win98.  Can't wait to install some other USB devices
and see what happens...
