Update on Colin McRae problems

Hi,

Here's a copy of a message I received from nick at Codemasters, that
may interest people who have been having problems.

------

Hi Paul,

I write as the Purchasing Manager for Codemasters. We're working flat out at
the moment to correct this problem and will hopefully have a solution before
the end of the week. It was a problem we were unable to recreate in internal
testing.

Please stay in touch with our helpline and visit our Web site, we'll be
posting a solution there in the short term.

I'm just reading this newsgroup from home but if I receive the patch I'll
mail it to you to keep you updated.

Thanks for bearing with us.

Nick Craig.

Subject: Colin McRae Problems

Hi,

I am unable to get Colin McRae Rally to run.

After going through the whole install, directx 6 etc and running the game, I
get the intro sequence (with no sound) then as it starts the game it crashes
out with a general protection fault. I tried reinstalling, rebooting etc
with no success.

Now Touring Car doesn't run either, when you get to the race track, the pc
locks up.

Before I was running Directx v5.

My PC spec is:

Pentium 200MMX
32Mb
VX motherboard
Soundblaster AWE64
Creative Infra 1800 CD ROM
Diamond Stealth 3D 2000  2Mb
Orchid Righteous 3dfx  4Mb
550 Mb Drive C
1200 Mb Drive D
Win95

The PC ran the demo fine.

               Thanks

I don't have CM, but I too was having problems with TOCA and DX6. And it is
a bear to remove DX6. So I sure hope that CM does not require DX6 only, to
work. Otherwise I'd only be able to play CM, and nothing else.

CM does require DX6, but i've got no problems with TOCA + DX6. Perhaps it's
time to hunt out all those driver updates? :)

<snip>

Here's an interesting little solution that seems to have solved the
probs with CMralley for quite a few ppl.

In the main game dir there is a file called qmixer.dll. Rename this to
qmixer.dlx or wahtever .. to stop it being recognised. Then, reboot
the machine in order to circumvent the programs attachments to it..
and try that.

So far.. 8 out of 9 ppl with problems said this solved them..

Personally I didnt have a problem to start with so i can only offer
this as advice not gospel :))

Zen..

I am not the only one who has had problems with DX6 and games. In TOCA, the
tracks in the selection screens are real dark, and the game locks up after
about 10-15 laps. And in Mech Commander, I have a lot of problems when
playing on MPayer with DX6, and I have a few other games too that all have
bizarre lockups - but with DX5 no problems at all. And I have WIN98, and I
built my PC by myself, and have all name brand components as I spared no
expense in building it at the time (long story, but everything I owned was
stolen when being relocated by my company - and I am STILL trying to get the
rest owed me a year later). So I shouldn't have any problems, but I do for
some odd reason.
