GP3 locking up pc....

Hmmm, GP3 keeps crashing after about 5 or 10 minutes? The whole pc locks
up and I get a blank screen, the only way to resolve it is to do a hard
reboot.

This is on my *new* pc which is an Athlon Duron 650 running at 900 on an
Asus A7V m/b with 128Mb pc133 sdram, and using a V3 2000 card.

But I don't think it has anything to do with the fact its being
overclocked (although I may be wrong?) as GPL, Rally Masters, and Super1
Karting are also running on this pc as happy as Larry with no probs (as
is Win98 and a few other things).

The music/sound effects contunue to play when the lockup occurs, maybe
its a soundcard prob? (running a basic SB16 PCI card here) I'll try and
get new drivers for the card to see if that cures it.

I suppose it might also be the game port on the soundcard?

Anyone got any other ideas? anyone else suffering from lockups too?

I'm gonna try a GP3 re-install as well to see if that cures it.

I'd almost guarantee it's the O/C by the way you describe it.  Just for
giggles, back her down to factory spec (650) and see what you come up
with.  What speeds are the PCI & AGP bus running at right now?

I get very similar lockups.

They seem to occur more rapidly when processor usage is way over 100%, i.e.
I have the textures and resolution set way over those that my lowly pc can
handle.

Lowering resolution so that CPU usage hovers around 100 - 130 % gives me
much longer without crashing.

Ensuring that CPU usage is always less than 100% means that I have a graphic
detail that is only just better than GP2

I should point out that I am squeezing the last dying breath from an

hoping to reach 850Mhz).

I also found that pitting in the rain, when a large number of other cars are
also in the pits, and thus graphic load is at a peak, is a sure bet that the
game will lock up. So it seems that the advice to always  keep CPU usage
below 100% is well worth heeding.

It seems like you may have a serious overclocking issue. Have you
tried to get the same crashes on the default 266 Mhz speed ? (Like GP3
would work very well at all then:)

I got this C566 two months ago, and there is no way I will get that
chip to go 850, but again, I'm always unlucky in such cases, so your
will probably work :)

Think I've cured it, I had directx7 installed, (I thought I had
directx7a), I installed 7a and it appears to work ok now.....

BTW, It was running ok for the first day or so when I o'clocked this new
pc, thats why I'm sure its not that...

Nah, don't think, so had GP3 running ok when I first o/clocked this pc
to 900. But i've changed a lot on this pc since then!

I've installed directx 7a (had v7 installed) and that appears to have
cured it (I hope?)

BTW, I'm running the Duron at 9 x 100 busspeed, PCI is 33Mhz AGP is
66Mhz.

Good point, but I don't think its causing my particular problem, as I
have a nice new shiny Athlon 900 (650 Duron overclocked to 900) on an
Asus A7V m/b with 128Mb pc133 ram, and with pretty much *everything* on,
its under 100% for most of the time (apart from race starts).

But, I have actually turned off a few things anyway, especially in
mirrors, just in case.
