GPL Frametrate and ADSL

With your frame rate problems with the SLI, i know the answer.  GPL is
processor limited not graphics limited.  With the high physics at a high mhz
as compared to like 4 in other games it is much more processor hungry and
the AI is much more complex (it has to calculate THEIR physics also) so your
processor is overloaded and your video card is waiting for new input.  I
have the same setup as you and i have problems getting good frames with 20
cars also.  I race with half to no detail bias and just cars in the mirrors
and it works ok (all effects off like lighting).
With your adsl, i would guess that it has to do with the more info coming in
so your processor is doing more processing all this info coming in faster.
That is my guess.

William,

I have 2 Monster 3DII 12MB in a PII-450 and had the same problem of not
getting above 30fps. Someone else here on the newsgroup pointed out that I
needed to set my refresh rate to something greater than 60Hz (I went to
75Hz) and to click on "don't sync buffer swaps to monitor refresh rate" in
the control panel. Once I did this, I got consistent 36fps even at 1024x768
full detail with 19 AI.

I have a 350Mhz PII, 100 MHz bus, 128MB RAM, a Monster 3DII 12MB and a

24X CDROM.

I play GPL on VROC all of the time, and have been since it was
created. I was playing using a 56K modem, and it worked OK.

First:
I recently added a second Monster 3DII (SLI), and I saw very minor
gains in framerate (and I didn't change any settings in the game;
graphics, sound, etc.). All of my other games were improved by almost
double in performance/framerate, and that was with the res changed
from 800x600 to 1024x768. My first question is: are there hidden
settings for GPL I am not aware of (i.e. ini files or something)
related to framerate performance? Of course, the claim of SLI mode (by
Diamond) is incredible leaps in framerate, which I believe due to
other game performance increases. It seems as though I cannot push
beyond about 30-32 framerate!! Even if I turn down settings, it never
climbs above this rate. It seems kind of ridiculous that a machine
like mine (which could almost launch the space shuttle) struggles with
this game!

Second:
I just changed my internet connection from 56K dialup to ADSL. Wow!
what a difference in browsing and downloading. It immediately improved
*** online (such as Rainbow six, European Air War, etc by leaps and
bounds). Unfortunately, the framerate in GPL went DOWN!! I have no
idea how this is possible, but it did! The same question applies here:
are there hidden settings for GPL I am not aware of (i.e. ini files or
something) related to online play with fast connections? I am using
the core.ini supplied by Alison Hine.

I was able to un REM the line in the Core.ini that allows me to play
via TCP/IP with the ADSL connection.

Wayne,
YOU ARE THE MAN!!!  I changed my settings and I now run GPL at
800x600, full mirrors, full detail bias, and full detail settings.  I
AM PEGGED AT 36 f/s!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the great tip.  I had sent this message to sierra, and they
didn't have the answer.  I told them about your solution!!!!

Thanks again.
