Gran Prix Legends Freezing

Hi all.

Having a slight problem here..  First of all system specs.

Intel P2 450. On a Abit BH6 Board
Sound Blaster LIVE Value
Diamond Monster 2
Win 98 with all latest updates from MS
ATI Rage Pro AGP2x

All devices are using the latest BIOS , drivers.. ECT..

Heres my problem.

I start GPL, I get to the startup screen to enter my drivers name, within
seconds, LOCK..  I have to cold reboot.

I think it's a video driver issue, but have not examined it further yet.
So I thought I'd just post this to see if anyone has any "quick" insight.

I'm DYING TO play..

but unzip and put glide2x.dll in c:\sierra\gpl worked for me. also get a
cooling fan for the voodoo2. www.3dfxcool.com

I've had similar problems.  I think you are right about it being a driver
problem - I found the problem went away when I ensured that I had the
latest drivers for everything, apart from the Glide2x.dll, which I took
back to version 2.53 (rather than 2.54 which is the latest version).

Hope this helps.

Steve.

Diamond Monster.....once again those dreaded words echoed through the
halls of power....and from the other end of the hall, someone was heard
to utter, "Hey!!...Don't bring your stupid square mouse pointers around

Once again, you are dirty on the Monster because you got a faulty card or
you cooked it o/c'ing. Get the Glide 2.53 driver and put it in the GPL
directory.

I had freezing problems with my diamond monster 2 as well but when I lowered
the clock value to the lowest setting...... everything worked fine. This
seems to be an overheating problem and cooling off the card should allow you
to increase the clock value.

As is 3dfx, and they are working on the problem.  It is a bug in their
Glide 2.54 drivers.  This version of Glide does not properly synch with the
hardware when it reads data out of the frame buffer.  Sometimes this will
cause GPL to leave 'mouse droppings', sometimes it can lock the 3dfx board.
If you can't use the Glide 2.53 .dll for some reason, try to spend as
little time as possible in the menus, and drive from the "F10" view instead
of the***pit view.  If you want faster response in getting this issue
fixed, feel free to talk to 3dfx about it.

In the mean time, if the screen locks, try hitting <del><ctrl><alt> (in
that order - it is important to press and hold the <del> key FIRST - if you
press it last, GPL never sees it).  GPL will exit when it sees the
<del><ctrl><alt>.  The 3dfx board will most likely remain locked in its
current state, and not return to pass-thru mode, so the machine will still
appear to be hung, but it is actually running just fine.  You can then hit
the "Windows" key to bring up the Start Menu, press U to select Shutdown,
press R to select Restart the computer, then press return to confirm.  At
least this will be a cleaner reboot than hitting the reset button.

As for a GPL patch: Yes we are working on one.  It should not be long
before it is complete, but I won't give you an expected release date until
it has been posted on-line.

You do not have to go to these extreme lengths. The problem is an
incompatibility with the new glide drivers in DirectX 6.

All you have to do is place an old version of the glide2x.dll file
(v2.53 from DirectX 5) in your GPL directory, this will allow GPL to
work with DirectX 6, and all other programs will use the newer version
of the file.

Are you using Voodoo 2 with the latest drivers?  If so, try the previous
version of the driver.  I had the same problem and it turned out to be the
Voodoo 2 drivers.

Well, I've done that, put the glide 2.53 files into gpl
folder. My screen is now locking up while driving. It's
happening more and more now. The reason I installed the
latest glide and direct x drivers was that GPL had started
to lockup. I'm not sure what the fix is for all of this, but
I'm going back to my old voodoo drivers completely, and if
it still locks, I'm going to try and remove direct x and
reinstall direct x 5.
