F1GPW & MS Sidewinder Wheel?

When I select my sidewinder force feedback wheel as controller in F1
grand prix world the frame rate drops to the shithouse. I've tried
changing the port driver between standard gameport to diamond monster
gamport (I've got an M80) with polling on and off with no effect.
Anyone sussed it out already or can offer ideas?
