What is the best way to backup GPL, F1 2K2 files? I have collected
many patches and car sets in the past, and don't want to re-install
them all if my HD dies, do I just backup all the files within the
program directories, or are there files hidden in the Windows
directories, registries that need to be copied as well?

Thanks in advance!

GPL is completely self contained within the Sierra/GPL folder.

Well almost totally...the installation registers papyjoy.sys (for generic
joystick drivers) and papycpu.sys (for errr...dunno:) but these generally
are never needed.
Remember if u are gonna back gpl up to a cd then always zip it first to
save the file attributes

Yeah, and you can fit tons of stuff on to the CD if you zip too.  My
1.6GB GPL directory fits on a CD easily zipped up.  Those DAT's pack
up nicely.  :)

F1 2002 is also fully self contained - just zip it up and pop it on a CD-R.
Might have to rerun 3D config if you upgrade your PC etc.

Thanks for all the responses. It will be easier than I originally
thought, thanks for the tip on zipping the files too.

Cheers,
Jerry

I guessing he'll probably have to re-run setup to rebuild the registry keys
unless he exports that entire branch (not hard to do...) to a .reg file.

No, I've upgraded my PC and reinstalled windows a couple of times and never had
to reinstall F1 2002 - the registry settings don't seem to do anything much.

Same here.  For F1200x, I just copy it over from the CD and run the
3dConfig file to update the .INI file.

OK, I stand corrected.  Past EA games I've owned required the serial and
other keys to be stored in the registry...

Very true. I'm a little puzzled as I have to enter a serial when I install
the game and this gets stored in the registry, but I can still play online
fine without the serial being in the registry.  Go figure.

You can install the game without entering the long serial number and
going through ea's installer.  Just copy all the files from the
install CD to your HD, remove all the read-only file attributes.  Then
run 3Dconfig.exe and that's it.

They smarted up with Nascar Thunder 2003, they compressed everything
so you have to use their installer.

:) Cool.  Didn't realise that...  I guess the serial number is just designed
to be a minor annoyance for pirates (and legit owners)

I always back up the complete folder.
After a fresh installation of the game you can simply copy the old stuff into
the newer folder. Works fine at least with GPL.
Iirc I also did that with F1 2k2 already.
