Ruud, et al.,

Passing on some nuggets from the Dan Greenberg mine, regarding F1 CS
2K/Mac. There's a crap load here. Some of it may be useful to someone on
RAS. I just wanted to be sure this info got posted before I lose it.

To quote some recent emails, Dan Greenberg wrote:

[regarding wheel calibration]

If you have a wheel you should be able to hold the gas pedal at some
middle-ground value to maintain speed. You say you keep accelerating
even when not pressing the pedal? Sounds like a config issue. Go to the
controller screen and verify everything's as it should be (wheel =
x-axis, pedals = y-axis (the pedals will have their labels flipped in
OS X due to a bug in HID, but that won't affect driving)). Once checked,
enter a race or driving school and turn the wheel both directions as far
as it'll go, and press each pedal as far as it'll go. Since there's no
Input Sprocket any more, the game has to calibrate the wheel as you play
(it guesses in the mean time), so doing this at the start of a race will
ensure it's calibrated correctly.

Aaaand there may be MOMO issues with Nascar 2k2 too:

and OSX.2.3 not happy together  Reply with quote
Hi again all,
I just picked up (the truly amazing) Nascar 2002 but I cannot get it to
recognize most of the MOMO steering wheel (or my Exterminator game pad).

When configuring the MOMO, the app does not see the wheel at all, and
when I configure the gas and brake, the app thinks that I am steering.
(FYI:the wheel and brake work fine in F1-2000.)

The configuration interface in Nascar 2002 is horrible, but I am pretty
sure that I have done the right things in the right place.

Is anyone else having trouble getting Nascar to see your joystick,
gamepad, or steering wheel?

Thanks,
Matt

Definitly send in a buggsie to f1supp...@feral.co.uk and CC to
f1supp...@zonic.co.uk (F1 2000 Support).

Dair's post yesterday to IMG mentioned a test app called "HID_Scanner
test" that Zonic is using to help troubleshoot F1 CS 2k. I asked about
it and they sent me a copy. Small app (36 kb stuffed), it looks at the
hardware level of all attached input devices (ignores keyboard),
specifically the MOMO. It generates a text file which the user then
sends back to Zonic. Definitely ask over at f1supp...@zonic.co.uk for a
copy.

For short term, try the "hard jerk in opposite direction" (tm) fix; its
worked for me.

Feel free to pass on/forward to Ruud. I've not been posting to RAS. I
have (in anticipation of getting a PC, after all as a web dev I _really_
need a top level PC @ 3 gig w ati 9700 for F1 2k2/GPL, no wait! I mean
for compatibility testing, yeah, thats it  ;) , been grabbing tracks and
the Turbo mod for F1 2k2. Strange, Simbin.com's domain has lapsed! I was
able to get Brands hatch, Donington and other exclusive simbin stuff from:

http://www.d-f1-c.de/pafiledb/pafiledb.php?action=category&id=5

Ciao,

What happened with the replay file I sent? Does it play as 2 shades of
black?

Can you send me a small 500k-1mb (I'm on 56k dialup), VCR file that has
the problem? This may be an issue where deleting and reinstalling could
be the fix.

Also heard back from Pieter/Bob Van der Stok about the Zandvoort track
(zandvoortf1.zip), which is indeed corupted. He's checking to see if he
has a back up.

Over at the Troubleshooting forum at IMG:

1)http://www.insidemacgames.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=7341&sid=7cc24ac0...

and

2)http://www.insidemacgames.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=7301&sid=7cc24ac0...

Dair Grant from Zoic (company that did the port for Feral) sez:

1) "We've had a couple of reports of this steering problem with the MOMO
wheel, but I'm afraid we don't have a fix right now.

However we are talking to Logitech about it, and are trying to establish
if it's a problem in the MOMO driver or in F1 (it doesn't seem to happen
with everyone, and even then it seems intermittent).

It would be interesting to know if you have ever had this problem
immediately after launching F1 - i.e., have you ever seen it on the
first race after starting the game? If not then we may be able to work
around it by disconnecting and reconnecting to the wheel on each race,
rather than keeping the connection around until you quit. "

2) "If you've got a specific test which you don't think is behaving
correctly, can you send us a mail so that we get it logged as a bug? If
you can send it to:

f1support AT feral.co.uk

Then we'll open a bug to look into this. It may be controller related,
so can you include details of what wheel/OS combination you're using -
thanks."

I think I can confirm/repeat a sharp leftward pull buggsie that runs you
off track if not anticipated in the first or second Monza test, also
think I can confirm a "bad user" (eg: drive the car into the wall
_Before_ the 2nd test starts and see where the wheel resets to  [;-)]
buggsie or two in the Indy tests.

When I get some time I will be doing some testing of the above as well
as trying the "if no bug in first race then try un/re-plugging the
wheel's usb" work-around and file a report(s) to f1supp...@feral.co.uk.

On another topic, I tried the "TurboFerrari.zip from the Hungarian
site. It expands to F03gpxa.veh, a vehicle file which I put in the
Ferrari folder hoping for an new sound, lag in acceleration, new skin or
any/all three. Well it hosed all instances of Ferrari in the setup menu!
No spinning car or driver images to choose from. Could not fix with my
backup of the folder so I did a clean install of the app (put F1 CS 2000
folderinto the trash but did not empty it). This failed. So I went
hardcore and again deleted the whole F1 CS 2000 folder, emptied trash
then rebooted and ran permissions fix and reinstalled. That worked.
Doing this I also found that the school preferences/records are not kept
in the school folder. No idea where the game keeps it's records. Will be
looking at the mod sites for info.

Ah well, good luck and let's see what happens next.

[An Even earlier post:]

Hi Jim (and Dear Fereal and Zonic Support Readers),

Sorry I've been a bit busy of late. I did see your post to r.a.s but
have not had time to reply. Don't know if it will help but you should
run "fix permissions" from Disk Utility before and after
installing/updating the OS and apps.

I think the MOMO issues are bugs needing updates from Fereal/Zonic and
perhaps from Apple (let's see how folks w. the Nascar game make out).

As to your replay issues (see below and my attachment), I think you may
do well to reinstall.

First some Mac gaming resources:

http://www.insidemacgames.com/forum/
http://www.macgamer.com/wcgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi
http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/ -> Forums (sporadically offline including at
the time of this writing) also fan sites Mac Racer X
http://racer.twisteddot.net and http://www.macracing.tk (offline at the
moment), neither of which have much of anything yet.

I am registered at IMG as Speed, Trixie and Chim Chim  [;)] and post on
occasion.

As of 01/05/03 Mac OS X is at 10.2.3 (6G30) and F1 CS 2k is at 1.0.1

My setup (from Apple system profiler): Snortport dual gig, 768 mb ram,
80 gig ATA, ATi 9000 driving two 22" monitors (it's a work box), Apple
Extended USB Keyboard, USB-PS/2 Optical Mouse (Logitech Dual Optical w.
USB Overdrive software), Logiteck MOMO -Product id- 49813 ($c295),
Device Speed = low, Power (mA) = 500

My MOMO is the older red one with metal shifters on the wheel.

Game set up is via Joystick icon (main screen) to "Controls/general
Controls", with options (via red triangles, upper left corner w. pic of
keyboard) to "Controls/Controller #1 Advanced Settings" (sensitivity,
deadzone settings), and thence to "Controls/Controller #2 Advanced
Settings". Other than this, I see on other way to tweak controller
settings. However if you want to mess with the guts of the OS, and have
installed ProjectBuilder check:

System/Library/Frameworks/ForceFeedback.framework/Versions/A/ForceFeedback

System/Library/Extensions/ImmersionForceFeedback.kext

System/Library/Extensions/LogitechForceFeedback.kext

I have not messed with the game's "Advanced Settings" (sensitivity,
deadzone) yet. Nor have I played with the guts of the OS.

Ahhh,... Here's an idea:
usr/Library/Preferences/Electronic Arts/F1 2000/Preferences Data

where my "Preferences Data" is:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<registry>
<key name="HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT">
</key>
<key name="HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG">

see if yours is different (and note the jest; <key name="IndirectX">
;-) ? I would suspect that this file is modified by the settings in the
game though.

I noticed that USB Overdrive does not recoginze the MOMO, only the mouse
(it has a setting for "joystick"). Perhaps the next iteration? Or do we
really need/want another ...

Thanks for the summary Jim, although I wouldn't describe it as a '***
load' personally   ;)

Anybody have any luck with installing add-on scgt/F1 cars in F1CS/Mac?
Me had none so far, must say.

To all Mac racers, be warned though, do not install QuickTime 6.1 since
it will mess up F1CS. I read on the forums Feral has a beta fix, so

I only meant that there's a lot of it and that it has taken me a while
to getting around to finally posting it. Sorry for the delays. I meant
no disparagement to Dan and all the others who have so selflessly
contributed to easing my ignorance.

Hey hey, no disparagement taken ;)!!!!!

Been a bit busy this month so I haven't had time to post here. Sorry.
Thanks and props to Jim, Ruud, Pieter and all the Mac Racers.

Have installed the 2002 Ferrari from:
http://www.racesimcentral.net/
For the first 2 installs of F1 CS 2k it worked fine, not using it in my
current install.

Since I'm having some 3rd party track probs (Zandvoort,
Oesterreichring), I'm about due for another (#4) clean re-install of
the app. :(

That being the case, I'm going to try the Hungarian "TurboFerrari.zip"
again (it expands to F03gpxa.veh), which last time I hoped would add
new sound, lag in acceleration, new skin or any/all three, instead it
hosed all instances of Ferrari in the setup menu!

{ot}
Anyone tried GL_Tron_0.62 yet (fun, free light cycle arcade game
   from 80's movie "Tron")? http://www.racesimcentral.net/
{/ot}

Ok, I'm off to crash F1 CS 2k, wish me luck ;0!!!

Thanks for the link Dan, that's the first time confirmation that other
(pc) cars can be used on the Mac as well, I think.

Good luck with reinstall # 4 :)   (I think I'm up for #6 unless things
keep working as they are now  ;)
