Or do you have more than 1 CD drive?  I have to use the same one I
installed it from, or I get the same error message.

The box said "Windows 95 or better", so I installed LINUX!

Uh, it wants you to put in the CD :)

This is required for multiplayer games.

Ah, that's different :)

Is it a CDR drive?

Some new copy protection methods used by game compaines don't work right
with CDR drives, and this is becomming a big problem with more and more
folks using CDR drives as their primary CD ROM drives.

If this is the case, I'd buy a cheap IDE CD-ROM drive to act as a ***
drive, as it doesn't appear the game companies are going to back down on
this one.

Actually, the drive I installed it from *is* my CDRW drive.  If I now
put it in my cheapy 24x Creative Labs CD drive, no go.  Many, though not
all, games log the drive they were installed from.  They then require
you to use that drive.  Unless, of course, you edit the file & enter the
other drive designator. ;-)

I have had the stupid problem of installing from my 40x CD-ROM (drive Z:)
and then needing to have the CD in my CDRW (drive X:) to play the game.
This is a nuisance because I'd rather whittle down the MTBF on a 50$ CD-ROM

feh!

Your CDRW only reads at 6x?  Ouch!!  Got me a CL 4224 a few months ago
for $240.  Reads the same as my vanilla CD drive, 24x.  Problem was, it
then became my 5th IDE device & I had to disconnect one.  So my third
hard drive (5.1GB) had to go, my Linux drive!  I'm considering an IDE
card (I think they're PCI's?), cuz I've been going thru Penguin
withdrawals!!

>Your CDRW only reads at 6x?  Ouch!!

When I bought it is was as fast as they came and I paid 450$ for it,
besides.

My install of Mandrake 6.0 is on /hdb1, about 1.4G of a 6.4G drive.  Add a
78M swap (256 meg in the machine..like I need this swap space), second 1.4G
ext2 partition and a 3.4G FAT32 partition (drive G: in Windows) within an
extended partition and you have the whole drive.  /hda is a 20.4G drive with
a 5.5G fat32 C: partition and three more fat32 partitions (D:, E:, F:) in an
extended partition with E: being my "sims partition" of 3.71G with only 218M
free..(yikes).    My regular CD is IDE on its own channel and my CDRW is
SCSI. I had a JAZ drive on the SCSI card, but it was useless and I yanked
it.  It also runs my scanner.

Now if I can just stop typing "ls" when I want to know what's in a directory
in a dos box I will be all set.

Yepp, that's the new marketing strategy:

Screw the paying customer, to stop some kids pirating a game (for a week,
until the doodz make the patch).

Ok, if the drive letter changed on you, just use the device manager listing
to assign the CD the old CD-ROM drive letter.

If, of course, the movement of the drive letter is the problem.

For this very reason, every single Windows Installation I run immediately
gets the CD Drive set to drive "Z".  That way, it can't get bumped or moved.

Or, another drive if a Novell Public directory is being mapped there by a
login script.
