Maybe I should re-phrase the question in the subject, but is it better to
play with a steering wheel kit say from Thrustmaster? More realistic
control?

It has to be more realistic to play with a wheel and pedals. At least it is
for me. None of my "real life' cars come equipped with joysticks.  ;-P

Fif*** years ago or so, Saab made a concept car that was joystick
controlled! Clearly, the public wasn't ready for it then -- but today's
*** generation might be up for it?...

I did not know that !!

Jacques Villeneuve once said that he would drive his Formula One car with a
joystick if he could.  It's imho a much more precise way to steer a car then
a wheel.  I mean, there is no logical reason why it's a round wheel.  The
only reason is that going back through history, the first cars had shafts
that would pivot to turn the wheels, and they were going straight down.
With time, those shaft went more and more diagonal towards the front of the
car, thus the way wheels are now.

There's also the taxi in the movie "Total Recall"  <G> :)

I somehow doubt he would say that if he'd tried it.  I don't think
they'd have electronic joystick-force feedback to match the mechanical
one the use today.

A wheel aids immersion, obviously, but I wouldn't consider it a
pre-requisite unless you have a serious interest in playing more than just
the occasional racing game.

With your performance at the LAN's...  I don't think it matters if you drive
with a keyboard, Joystick, Wheel, HOTAS system, or voice recognition!

You can crash the entire field very easily with any of the above control
methods!  =P

LMAO, I bet if you asked everyone in that race, the would have paid you $5
each to NOT show up!!

that with a joystick, when, eg. you press left to turn, then in the game the
car turns at some constant angle, because a joystick can only provide two
states, turning or not. My question was, does a steering wheel kit simulate
real steering? eg. if you turn a bit, then the wheels turn a bit, if you
turn a lot, then the wheels turn a lot.

Same with the gas pedal, on a joystick you're either accelerating or not,
but does a pedal simulate a real car pedal? Press a bit and it accelerates a
bit, press a lot and it accelerates a lot?

Dude I would have had a kick-arse Die-Cast with 5$x30 drivers <G> ;-P

(In case you didn't know, I won a Bodine die-cast for that).  But whatever
stupid and rookie that move was, I had the right to be in that race.

Huh?  Don't know what type of joystick you're using, but just about
all use proportional movement so that you have a variable rate of
turning/acc/braking.  Some games may not use *linear* movement when
you have a joystick, but that's usually to compensate for the shorter
range of physical movement of a joystick compare to a wheel.
Try calibrating your joystick on Windows and you'll see what I mean.

You are using the wrong terms here.  Joysticks have a complete range of
inputs on their axis.  If you steer them let's say 40% of it's X-range
(considering 0% is the neutral position), then it's not turning or not
turning.  You will be turning 40% to the left.   Joysticks have been that
way for decades now.

What you might be confusing with is "gamepads", which are standards to
console games.

Of course.  I mean, why would it NOT? ;-)    They use potentiometers to
direct your mechanical input into the simulations.

Another time, it's an obvious yes.

Never said you didn't have the RIGHT to be in that race.  You bringing it up
seems to suggest that you yourself question if  you should have been in it
or not. hehe
