Question about Creative Labs Banshee card...

by colt » Wed, 30 Dec 1998 04:00:00

I hope someone in this group can answer my question because I'd really
like to play Nr99 in 3D mode...I have a Packard Bell(Pent200) with an
S3TrioV64 chipset(2megs max) built into my motherboard....My question
is two fold....

1) Is this new Creative Labs 3D Blaster Banshee card just an
accelerator card or can I use it ro replace my current video
configuration?? Meaning is it both a regular video card plus an
accelerator???

2) I am told by PB people that installing another video card
will override my current video settings...meaning that I cannot use it

in conjunction with my current S3Trio...anyone know if this is going
to be a problem??

And one other thing...anyone out there who has this new Banshee card
from Creative Labs,,could you tell me what IRQ it tries to install
to...??? I only have a couple of free IRQ's and I'd hate to buy this
card only to find a conflict...thanks ....

IRQ is dependant on your PCI slot used. Banshee is a slower 3dfx than 3dfx
II and its a 2D and 3D card both. Get a 3dfxII or ver I

Question about Creative Labs Banshee card...

I got this exact card for Christmas.  My machine is a Compaq PII-300
which has a built in video card as well (different card though -- ATI
Rage Pro).

Yes, it's both a regular 2D and 3D accelerator card.  It will  replace
your current video card configuration.

Yes, it will override your current video settings, but that's exactly
what you want.  It's a better card than what's built in, so dont worry
about losing the ability to use your S3.  Get the banshee up and running
and dont look back.

It shouldnt be too much of a problem getting the Banshee running over
the built-in.  I had to spend a good number of hours getting it to
recognize the new card over the built-in, but i eventually got it
working.  I can try to help if you need it.

I dont know what IRQ it's using.  I didnt have to mess with any IRQ
settings, but YMMV.

Good luck!

As you now know it's an "all-in-one" card.  Disable your S3.

You MIGHT have to disable the onboard video in your system's BIOS.  Look
at your "BIOS Setup" and see if there's a setting for it. Disable it BEFORE
you put in the Banshee and you're in business.

Most PCI cards install to IRQ 12 by default.  It's PnP(ray) so you
shouldn't have a problem.  Also you may be able to disable "Assign IRQ to
VGA" in your BIOS Setup.

The Banshee's a good way to go, but an addon 3Dfx card would be cheaper
in the SHORT run.

Based on reading a lot of benchmarks, synthetic and games, the Banshee is
faster than the Voodoo2 on non-multitexturing apps, which is most (except
Quake and its ilk).  This is due to a faster clocking.
