GPL with Voodoo 3000 out of scan range

by Steve Smit » Thu, 05 Aug 1999 04:00:00

I keep reading the posts about how much better GPL is with a 3dfx card, so I
ditched the old ATI Xpert98 and stuck in a Voodoo 3000.  Latest drivers,
1.02.11.  All I get is a black screen when the game starts up and an error
message from the monitor saying "out of scan range".  Deleted game and
reinstalled, can't even get to the splash screen.

System is a Dell XPS R400 (PII 400 MHz) with a 17 inch Dell monitor (which
is a rebadged Sony, I believe).

Please help!  I was so looking forward to 30+ fps...!

Hi!

Seems that your monitor is not capable of synchronizing the videosignal
when the card switches over to 3D-accelerated mode. You'll have either
to choose another monitor type in the Win-settings or to manually adjust
the refresh rates for glide-apps in the display-properties dialogue.

Bye!

I had that problem with my system also.....
try going the the control pane;/display and settings/advanced and make sure
your exact monitor is selected and not just a generic plug and play. BTW you
DON"t want to change your desktop to 1024x768 or you will get an 'out of scan
rang when you boot up. to your desktop! you can also try unchecking plug and
play in the advanced settings if (only if) after boot up, you machine keeps
choosing something other that your correct monitor.

Steve,

Don't despair.  I had the exact same problem that you had (I also have a
XPSR400 with the 17 inch Dell Trinitron).  The problem is that the default
Microsoft monitor drivers are not quite compatible with the Voodoo3 3000
when running at 640 x 480.  The only refresh rate I could get to work for
this is the one labeled "Adapter Default", which is way too flickery.

The solution is to go to the Dell site and download their newer monitor
drivers.  They come in a file called dellmon.exe and are dated January of
this year.  Follow the instructions for updating your drivers and everything
works great.

Let me know if you have any problems.
