I'm considering buying a Saitek R4 non-FF sheel, primarily for use with
GPL, but have read a lot of messages about its *** shaking and such
like.  Does this mean it should be avoided, or is there a solution to this
problem?

Yep!  I bought one 2 months ago from PC World for 80 pounds

I have not had a problem!!!!

I would go for it!!

I would not advise buying a Saitek R4 for GPL - the pedals do not have
enough travel to control the car - as soon as you drive the Lotus you will
see what I mean - Chronic wheelspin !. I changed mine for a MS FF Wheel,
which has a better pedal set (although I would prefer more travel and
resistance). Hope this helps.

There is definitely a higher susceptibility to the shakes with this wheel.
It uses a compressed signal (the "ratio digital technology") that when it
works makes the wheel more responsive, but when it doesn't work (some sort
of electrical/electronic interference) results in worse calibration and
response than a regular wheel.

Overall, I like the design.  The non-FF pedals are much more comfortable
than my Nascar Pro pedals, although they have less travel--but not the
ridiculously short travel of the FF version or the Logitech pedals.

If the design (paddles, gearshift and buttons) appeals to you, I would try
one, but makes sure it can be returned.

I am in contact with an official at Saitek now who is trying to pin down the
problem.  A dedicated game port may not help if the interference is being
generated inside the system (which it usually is).  A game port to USB
converter should solve any problems, and he is testing that right now.

Marc.
