speaking of also-consoles; anyone tried one of the new(ish) Nuon-based
DVD-players?

Here in Europe a region free DVD player is a must. It's getting better
now, but the production quality of the movies released here are often
on a laughable level, like no 5.1 sound and no widescreen and so on.

Of course not, but getting a game console and DVD player in one unit
is a nice insentive. I doubt I would even get GT3 for it anyway,
because I'm not going to play a racing game on a gamepad and buying a
wheel is an expensive option with no place to mount it to anyway. What
do people do when they play such a game on a console, put a desk in
front of their TV so they have somewhere to mount the wheel and
pedals?

It supports the I-Link, Which is basically a firewire cable.
My friend and I spent a few hours with our PS2's plugged together playgin
GT3.
The GT3 manual says you can plug in up to six through a firewire HUB.

GT3 fits the bill then ... as long as you're willing to set up a
little GT3-arcade for multiplayer (i.e., multipler PS2s & TVs). Less
accessible multiplayer to be sure, but not lesser quality.

Um, no. Whatever it's flaws may be, the car models are unequaled on
any platform.

Huh?  Raced many sims?  Or maybe your definition of modeling doesn't
include visually modeling damage and other things missing from GT3's
"unequaled" car models.

If you link three PS2s in split-screen, you get three "duels" , 2-player
races. If you link six PS2s and six TVs via i-Link, you get one
6-player race.

Pretty much all of them (no, visual damage isn't a big deal to me - no
one's ever really pulled that off well in a visal sense anyway).

I agree. I use it because it's my only DVD player, but it is
feature-short and not very user friendly.

Now that actually sounds pretty cool - a LAN party for PS2s...<g>  I actually
haven't follwed them enough to remember they had connectivity.

I believe you can also hook up a 7th set for spectators to view the
action.

What's REALLY cool is if you link 6 PS2's and 6 TV's it will multiplex the video
out to all 6 TV's to create one giant TV (like those video walls).  I doubt
anyone other than an appliance story would be able to do this.  I'd love to see
it at Best Buy but they would never take 6 PS2's out of the box.
