"Data point" from another PC auto sim enthusiast:
Rented a PS2 to play GT3. 2 days into it...
Yes, the graphics are amazing. That's the big plus compared to GT and GT2.
For the rest, it seems basically like GT and GT2 with the same pluses and
minuses with a few improvements. For instance, I'd say they did improve the
interface (but that's not make or break, is it?)
Plus's:
*Duh, the graphics
*An interesting replay analyzer
*maybe they've upgraded the rally racing, but that's never been my thing
*Lots of cars compared to other games/sims, BUT (see minuses)
Plus (returned from GT, missing in GT2)
*Optional qualifying
Same Minuses as GT/GT2 (in my order of importance):
"Bungie" racing (Get behind, cars ahead slow. Get ahead, cars behind speed
up). Not a *racing* sim until they allow you to defeat this.
*Still less than sim-level AI
*No***pit graphics.
*Only 5 cars to race against.
*Crashing and bumper-cars are still good ways to win (but I think they made the
crashing a more severe penalty this time).
New Minuses:
*Nowhere near as many cars as GT2. They also concentrated on race cars instead
of everyday cars. Personal preference of course, but I liked GT/GT2 for being
able to drive Astra's, old CRX's, old 'Ludes, etc. Here, I get 3 different
versions of race Supras.
*Got rid of the used car market (though it still has old Miata's, del Sol and
Corolla RWD SR5)
So, to me, the GT series scores on playability and I do consider it to be a
*driving* sim. But it isn't a high fidelity *racing* sim. I consider buying
the PSX for GT2 to be worthwhile. Not sure I consider the same for the PS2 and
GT3 given the price (but the graphics are amazing :-). If you already have a
PS2 and are reading this ng, you already have GT3, don't you :-) It's a
no-brainer.
On some other console titles:
Bought a DC for F355. Superior to GT in all sim regards. But only a single
car to drive (and race against). Big plus for real tracks. AI cheated and
exhibited a bit of bungie-effect. Lacks the GT playability.
Also bought Sega GT and MSR (Metropolis Street Racer). I agree with the
previous poster: recommend a "no bid" on those two. Sega GT had horrble
controllability issues (with the stock DC controller). While much better res
than GT and GT2, the car models looked pretty fake. Also, the courses are
poor.
MSR is an arcade game plain and simple. Plus fairly unrealistic (though high
res) cars. Only an arcade racer would think it was (a) difficult and (b)
realistic.
BTW, I also used "Bleemcast" to play GT2 on the DC. The graphics are very much
improved adding life to the title. Alas, the controllability with the DC
gamepad leaves a lot to be desired.
