Nascar.com it seems have no respect for the deceased.
They have a replay of the crash on their website.

I'm speechless.

My thoughts go out to Dale Earnhardt's family & friends.

Cheers,
Adam

Me too.. I didn't see the race, it's being broadcasted here in Holland
this evening. So I went to www.nascar.com to read all about it when I
read the bad news on the GPLEA forum.
I clicked on the video, I wanted to see how it happened, especially
since there was a discussion on VROC about what happened exactly.
To my amazement they even showed an in-car view from the crash, I was
honestly SHOCKED that they showed this..

Couple of weeks ago I found a Senna tribute movie. His last lap. Just
before the crash the movie ended. Now that's a way to show respect.

Yeah, and the video will probably get to all the sports news in Europe
this evening. American motor racing never gets any attention in Europe
except when tragedy happens. Pictures are even on the front pages of
Norwegian online newpapers right now. Last time that happened was the
day after Fontana 1999...... :(

Is it online, or videotape ? Sounds really classy indeed.

Yeah, I thought that was pretty tasteless myself.

You think they could have given the guy more than a two inch box in on the
main page and an article.

I would think a simple record of his achievements would be more meaningful
and poignant then the crash video...

I guess I am just sappy.

Weird enough I couldn't find anything about it in my Dutch newspaper..
Nascar really isn't populair. Today at the office I talked to my
colleagues about the accident, but not one of them ever heard of Dale,
even worse, none of then knew what Nascar racing is..
Ok, I work with 30 woman who are not interested in car racing, but
still..

I'll post the link if I can find it again, I have my urls at home. I
believe it was from that f1movies site, the one with -lots- of F1
movies from allmost every year.

Another weird NASCAR.COM tidbit - they were the first to announce his death,
just after 6:30 EST.  I had just gotten home from the store, and I was
checking all over the place for news - even NASCAR's front page only said
"Earnhardt to Hospital".  When I clicked the link, the headline was
"Earnhardt fatally injured at Daytona", and mention in the story of "massive
chest wounds".  The time on the story was 6:33 EST.

I immediately called my dad (he lives in North Carolina, I'm in
Massachusetts) to see if he'd heard.  He hadn't, so I went back to the
NASCAR site to get the exact wording, and the front page now said "Earnhardt
Injured".  The story now had a headline reading "Earnhardt Injured at
Daytona", and the first paragraph was completely changed.  This wasn't five
minutes later.

For the next twenty minutes, I hoped that somebody had jumped the gun,
gotten it wrong.  Then the story started to show up at other sites -
Speedvision, ESPN - then on TV on CNN, finally on ESPN as well.  Through all
of this, the NASCAR site continued to only say that he was "injured".

I can only imagine that somebody at NASCAR.COM got the news and put the
story up, then was told by NASCAR to pull it until after the official
announcement, which came at 7:00pm EST.  It made for a very surreal
half-hour, as I started to wonder if I'd imagined the original story.

Sadly, I hadn't.  I was never a fan, but I'll miss him all the same.

Rick

I experienced the same thing, except I didn't see the updated page until
after 7pm est on nascar.com.  The reason this happened is that you and I
were viewing cached pages.  I figured that out, cleared my page cache, and
reloaded the page.  Then I was able to see for myself the horrible news that
to that point I was hoping was just usenet rumor.  It wasn't nascar.com's
fault, it was how our technology works.

Well you know, if Colin McRae would die, I doubt on our side of the pond
much people would know him either.  It's just normal that not everybody is
interested in sports, even less motorsports and motorsports specific to
another continent.
