Hawaii: Skill level changes!

Quote from Hawaii's Message of the day on 8/10/96:

Boy, this makes Dega a very dangerous place! Does this mean that if you
(skill 10, lets say) are hit hard and go spinning into the grass (and make 8
360deg turns) that you'll lose a minimum of 32 points? I think so. I've had
this happen to me on the old skill system and lost 10 points for one wreck
(I know I didn't get struck 10 times).

The old system was lacking so this may prove to be better overall. You'll
probably see more races nominated using higher minimum skill levels. As for
the jerks that like to wreck people, they'll get some huge payoffs for
knocking out a 13-15 guy. What Y'all think?

I'd like to get a conformation on this because I have experienced the
same thing. It was bad enough at one point per spin but at five points
per spin its getting out of hand. That kind of deduction for something
that might not even be my fault is not fair.

You guys are saying you get points deducted for spinning?  I was in a
race tonight and thought I was gonna get through a wreck in front of me,
but got tapped on the rear fender.  I must have spun 20 times from the
tri-oval to turn 2.  I didn't touch anything after the intial hit, but
would I loose points for every spin?

Also do you both loose points if you get together?

I think this should be the opposite.  The higher you go, the less
incident points you should get.  0's that only care about wrecking are
going to be looking for 8's and 9's because they know they can do more
damage to them.

I thought a while back that the points system should be a little
different in that the higher you go in skill level, the easier it should
be to fall back, but NOT because of incidents.  You should have to work
harder to finish more consistantly in the top 50% to keep your rating.
An occasional accident should not be so damaging, since the good drivers
know how to get into the pits, fix the damage and ride around for
position.  I've been in several races where an early incident has taken
me out of contention to win, but I still finished well.  I'm sure
Papyrus put this new system to lots of tests before making a decision,
but I thought I'd pay my 2 cents.

I agree 100%. I'm sure Papyrus gave this plenty of thought and it might
be OK if it only affected the one causing the incident, but since you
can be in an incident thats not your fault, its not very fair.

This is going to give drivers all the more incentive to race within their
class. I'm nervous, cause I have a league race at Bristol Friday night. I'm
only a few points away from advancing to the next skill level, too.
