It says in the nascar racing four guide book. the winner starts with 175 pts
then it decreases by 5 for every place until 7th place which gets 146 pts.
then it decreases by 4 pts per place until 12th which gets 127 pts. it then
decreases by 3 pts per place until 40th, which gets 40 pts then decreases by
3 pts until last place. If you lead one lap you get 5 bonus pts, if you lead
the most laps you also get 5 bonus pts. So the maximum amount of pts you can
get is 185.

Just punch in "nascar points faq" into a search engine.  You should
find hits for the rec.autos.sport.nascar.moderated FAQ.  For example,
<http://rasnm.carracing.com/faq2.html>.  It doesn't cover the "entire"
system, but it discusses driver points, manufacturer points, and
rookie points.

Driver points are awarded to the driver who starts the race.  John
Andretti quit early at Sears Point last year, finishing last.  Then he
substituted for Tony Stewart, finishing 10th.  John got 34 points and
helped Tony get 139.

Owner points are closely related to driver points.  They come into
play for provisionals.  Kyle Petty couldn't use a provisional at
Rockingham because the 45 team had so few owner points.

Owner points also determine much of the starting order when qualifying
is cancelled.  So Kevin Harvick's 443 points (good for eleventh in the
driver standings) plus Dale Earnhardt's 132 points gave the 29 team
575 owner points, starting in third place at Darlington.
