Nascar 2002 = slow, Nascar 4 = fast?

by Sami » Thu, 21 Aug 2003 23:17:36

I've been playing N2002 for a few days now and it was just a little
bit sluggish on my 1800XP & GeForce 3 Ti500 combo (by sluggish I mean

4 and try that and it runs silky smooth (pegged at the vsync 85fps),
but the weird thing is that the graphics in Nascar 4 aren't that
dissimilar to N2002, very close infact.

I was thinking about buying N2003 but if I can't get decent
performance out of it I won't bother...is there anyone out there with
a similar setup to mine playing 2003 with good framerates?  As it is
I'm playing Nascar 4 which is fine by me, but there are no multiplayer
servers on Sierra.com :(

For awhile, I was playing N2003 on a 1.4ghz with a Geforce 3 Ti200 and it
ran perfectly..  if that gives you any indication

I currently run NR2003 on an old 1.33Ghz AMD and a GF 3. It runs pretty much
like N4 and 2002 on the same system. I run mine in 1024x768 as well, though
I don't run everything maxxed out. The image I see is pretty good, and with
less than everything turned on (but not too watered down of settings) yeilds
me between 75-100 FPS most everywhere, with cars racing around me.

In N4, I could run most everything turned on (about like now, no skid marks
or steering wheel and some extraneous trackside objects turned off) and I
did considerably more than 85 FPS. Maybe there are some driver or setup
issues in play on your system as I imagine that Ti500 is superior to my
plain vanilla GF3.

I'm running a XP2100+  o/c to 2400 actual and a GF3 at 250/560. N2002 in
Open GL(slightly better fps) at 1280x960 32 bit,100% draw dist, most
everything on except reflections and anisotropy(that's a killer) and
2xFSAA.With this and a 30 car field( 31 drawn ahead,6 behind) i get  around
45-50 fps at the back of a standing grid at Watkins, drops to around 35 ish
with any anisotropy settings enabled.
Have you patched to 1.1.0.2

Another place where my post just didnt go?  if it shows up, srry.

IIRC, About the differences from 03 to N4...

If you didn't tweak anything, IIRC, N4 turned on less "eyecandy/frame
hitting options" by default.  by NR2003 many of these options were combined,
where you could "off, med, high" these things as a group of gfx not
individuals...  Also 02 & 03 began to get serious hits for sound card
performance, and for default (read as control panel) settings for GFX cards
as well...  I ran n4-2003 on a p2-1000mhz, with gf2 MX 32 meg card.  seems I
had much better frames than you, but I know I played with settings and
things till I had enough gfx goodies and keep my frame rates high.

Take the search engine "google" and search this group for posts about
settings and tweaking (separately if needed) geforce and NR 03 (NR4) there
was a lot of help back when...

This NG, doesn't have an official faq, just 'google' through the older
posts...

It's pegged at 85 because I have vsync enabled.

Well cheers everyone I'm going to buy it and give it a go!  It's the
last Papy game for the time being isn't it?

Sorry, I missed that as I am pretty sure that I disable v-sync as that is
what the performance tuning gurus for this sim have always advised one to
do.

And from what I hear, it is THE last NASCAR sim from Papy, ever. We'll see.
At least they are opening up the code for addons. It should be around for at
least 5-6 years to come as I seriously doubt that EA will be able to match
it in any tangible areas of comparison.

I went and bought it today, and for the most part it runs just fine.
I think the thing that takes the most framerate hit is running 42 sets
of AI.  I disabled track lighting as I couldn't really tell the
difference in quality.  With these settings I get about 45fps at most
times, with a low of about 30 when lots of stuff happens on screen.

I'm probably most impressed with the dirt and grease that slowly
accumulates on the windscreen over the race, brilliant!  I don't like
the way it suddenly disappears at the end of a pitstop though, they
should have one of the pit guys wipe it off.
