: Howdy from 'down under'.

: I'm a huge fan of motor racing, and I loved INDYCAR when it came out.  Great
: graphics, gameplay, etc etc.  My question is about the performance of NASCAR.
: I really want to get this game, because from what I've read it sounds as good
: as INDYCAR.  I'm curious about the SVGA version (CD ROM only).  What is the
: performance like ?  How would it run on the following system...
:       - 486 DX 50 (a true DX 50)
:       - 8 Mb RAM
:       - 210 Mb HDD
:       - Sound Blaster 16-bit card
:       - twin spin CD ROM
:       - Paradise video accelerator card

: Any comments and / or suggestions greatly appreciated.  Thanx in advance.
: Cheers !

I have a very similar system except that I have a DX2-50.  Standard VGA
is good.  Game play is excellent... But you can positively forget about
running in SVGA with anything less than a Pentium-90.

Mileage varies; I ran svga on a DX2-66 with an old, crappy no-name ET4000
video card. I don't know about frame rate *numbers*, but it was definitely
playable. I had to turn off textures on asphalt, grass, and grandstands; it
also helped when I opted for fm sound (nascar -f -h).

This is past tense, because I recently bought a P5-90. Here's the surprise: it
doesn't run noticeably better on the bigger machine. If you're worried,
consider buying the game from a store that still has a return policy. It's
good enough that you'll at least want to it.

I don't agree with this at all. I bought NASCAR the other day for my
system as so long as you don't turn all of the graphics on it runs
GREAT!

My system is a 486 DX2-66 with 8Meg ram and a Mach-32 (VESA) video card.
I turn on the car detailing, road skids, and wall detailing (I think I
turn on a couple of other things but I can't remember right now). I leave
the rest of the graphics on -auto- and set the minimum frame rate to
16fps.  The game looks great and is plenty fast on my machine. Maybe it
because I don't have INDYCAR to compare with but the speed is fine by me.

Now, that isn't to say that I don't have some complaints about the game:

- The game will sometimes crash when moving between some screens (eg.
garage to track menus)

- The menu bar for the replay is pathetic. Unless you want to rewind to
the very beginning of the replay it is difficult to find particular
sections. As well, moving between camera views is a pain. They should
have all of the views listed along the bottom of the screen so that you
can choose them with a mouse. There should also be a scroll bar for
selecting time periods.

- The more/less method of changing car setup, while being user freindly,
is a pain. It takes way to long to change setting. I'll often sit there
holding the <enter> key down for 30-40 seconds to make a large change
to, say, a shock setting.

There are a few other things that just don't come to mind right now.
Overall I enjoy the game and it is the most fun I've had racing in a
while. Now, If I can only learn to drive on a track other then Talladega
:-).
