GP3 multiplayer, modem vs LAN

Is there a way to play GP3 across the internet, when I've got a LAN
connection (UK university) and the person I want to play with has a modem? I
can't find anything in the manual, as it seems that the connections have to
be the same type at each end.

I could connect to the internet via my modem, but I'm a poor student :-)

But when your opponent is at home, will you be at the uni? Damn
students have FAR too much time on their hands...  ;-)

"poor student"?! I *know* what you've been doing over the summer!

Seriously, I think that there's going to be a problem with getting a
working connection set up.
