Can't Get AWE64 Gameport To Work In Win95 - Help!

by Scott R. Lun » Fri, 31 Jul 1998 04:00:00

I just put in a used AWE64 soundcard in my second computer.  Sound works
fine, and the gameport works in DOS, but I can't get either my joystick
or wheel to show up in Win95 DX5 Game Controllers.  In Device Manager, I
don't see any conflicts at all for the device.  I removed the gameport
from DM and it reinstalled when I rebooted, and I reinstalled DX5 -
still no luck.
When I click on "Add" a device, nothing shows up.  Here's the IO address
it shows in DM: 0200-0207.  I try to change it, but I can't change this
value - it says that this resource setting cannot be modified.  Please
help!  I don't understand this, as the port works just fine in DOS.

In this case, I'd say that the card apears to be ***ed. DON'T EVER BUY ANY
USED STUFF FOR YOUR COMPUTER!!!!! The money you'll save is never worth the
risk what screwed hardware could do to your computer and/or you data. I know
a case where somebody bought a used monitor. A month later his whole house
burned down due to a failure of that monitor. Think of it.

Ok ya lame-O's, its NOT the card, or the port. Its a bug that 95/98 DirectX
has with the AWE64 cards, be they value, or gold. Theres really only two
things you can do. One, unplug and replug the joystick in a few times with
the game controller window open, and watch for it to see it < OK> 2nd, you
can leave it plugged in, and on the game controller window click remove, and
then add, adding the joystick you have < I bet you have a sidewinder? they
seem to be the worst about it, which is funny since they are MS stuff > You
might have to do this 4 or 5 times. I usually wiggle the stick as I click
add, sometimes the signal will help it see it.

PS - go download DirectX 6, it might help you. It didnt me, but it might for
you.
