Nascar 2 - Rendition Review (quick)

by Donald R. Chapm » Fri, 06 Dec 1996 04:00:00

I have an Intel P166 with 32mb of RAM,  the Intergraph Reactor, and
TSW steering controller. I have run both N2REND.BAT and
RENDDMA.BAT(these are the 2 batch files provided to run the Rendition
version) from WIN95, and from shutting down to DOS. I am running with
all graphic details turned on, 4 cars heard, 8 cars drawn ahead and 2
behind. Running both batch files from WIN95 produce choppy results.
From DOS, RENDDMA.BAT is much smoother than running N2REND.BAT,
however, about 5-10 minutes into practice sessions RENDDMA.BAT locks
up my machine. I am pretty dissapointed so far as to how choppy
N2REND.BAT runs but I will keep trying to change configurations to
maximize performance. The most FRUSTRATING thing so far is that the
"Show Counter" feature for displaying frame rates which was displayed
in the N2 demo AND is shown and discussed in the manual is just not
there. I have also tried the ALT-R from Indycar 2 3D, read the
README.TXT, and experimented with various hot keys, and have not been
able to display the frame rate so I cannot give you specific figures.
For comparisons sake, I run the Rendition version of Indycar 2 with
all graphic details turned on, 8 cars heard, 28 cars drawn ahead, 4
behind and usually get 25-30fps depending on the track and traffic.
After about 3 hours of play so far with Nascar 2, I can say that I
love the new menu setup, car setup, sound, wheel spin, etc. I am
currently installing Nascar2 on a P100 32mb, Intergraph Reactor, and
Thrustmaster T2. Today I will also be running a 4 player network game
on 4 P200's 32MB, S3 Virge video cards. I will try to give reviews
tomorrow.
