Is anyone using FAT32?

by Eric Ruh » Thu, 22 Jan 1998 04:00:00

I am going to wipe my hard drive soon and reinstall Win95B, and am
seriously thinking about trying FAT32 instead of FAT16 (there's alot of
wasted space on my hard drive).  My main concern is that as I understand
it, older operating systems like DOS (and suprisingly even Windows NT
4.0 I think) can't see FAT32.  Are DOS applications affected by this as
well?  It's kinda pointless if I can't run N2 on it, ya know?  Also, is
it true that you can only enable FAT32 by creating a partition?  I have
a 3.8GB drive and since FAT32 supports drives up to around 2 Terrabytes
I was just going to do away with my partition and have one big FAT32
drive.  If Windows NT 4.0 doesn't run on FAT32 (I run both operating
systems) then I would have to partition anyway and use NTFS for NT.  But
like I said, if Nascar 2 won't run on FAT32 then the whole idea is out
the window.  Please let me know if you are using it and how you like
it.  Thanks!

This was the topic of a thread a couple of months ago.  It
scared me into re-installing WIN95 with FAT-16.

People reported performance problems.  I hope someone who
knows what they are talking about will comment.  All I know
about WIN95 is what people tell me.

Win95 is on my systems only for games, I work in Solaris.
So I'll give up disk usage for performance.

Of course, all contributions to this thread may praise
FAT32's performance, and I'll look like an idiot.

Runs just fine as do all DOS games.

The only real advantages of FAT32 are its ability to bypass the 2GB
partition limit and its use of smaller clusters on large partitions
(performance may go down slightly due to the increasing number of
clusters).  I use it for convenience, nothing more...

DOS 7.0 (the version of DOS Win95 is built on top of) has no problems
with FAT32.  N2 and every DOS app I've tried run just fine in pure DOS
or in a Win95 DOS box on my FAT32 drive.

I have had no problems whatsoever to run ICR2, N2 or GP2 using FAT32. With
FAT32 you waste less space due to the smaller clusters. I my case I gained
around 10% diskspace when I converted my 2.5GB disk to FAT32. Performance
wise I don't know since I installed a new motherboard at the same time.

I had no problem with GP2 run from my FAT32 hard drive.
(However, it's not there anymore due to F1RS!) :D

Any game that will run under Win95's DOS 7.0 (which should be every one
of them) will have no problems running with FAT32.  The only problem you
may have would be when the FAT32 drive has more than 2GB of free space,
as it can cause some programs to think there is not enough disk space to
install the game.

Eric,
Whats up with this thread? DOS7 runs fine on fat32, Window95OSR2 runs
fine on fat32, NT4.0 runs fine on fat32 (although it prefers NTFS.)
I dual boot OSR2/NT4.0 and run anything I please. Where did this goofy
thought come from anyway?
        All the best, Mike Davis

DOS games shouldn't have a problem with FAT32.  The only problems that
you might encounter is when using disk utilities that were created prior
to FAT32.  For example if you used Win95A's Scandisk program on a FAT32
drive.  Win95 OSR2 has a new set of utilities that are FAT32 compatible.

Andrew
