Ive just got a new HD and want to know wether its better to format it to
fat32 or NTFS. All i really use my pc for is game playing (gpl:) and the
security of the drive doesnt matter to me.
Is NTFS simply better for a win XP system?.. or as all my other HD's are
fat32 should i stick with that?

NTFS is only usefull for file's rights and user's rights.

FAT32 is better for speed and security.

As far as i know.

NTFS is always in a known state unlike FAT.  If your system crashes NTFS
does not require the scan disk process.

I like NTFS for its smaller cluster size. Granted with today's larger hard
drives its not as big of an issue as it use to be. If you don't have a
second computer that will read NTFS I'd stick with Fat 32 so you can reclaim
your data incase of a system failure.

Yes, FAT32 offers no security, that's one of the big pluses for NTFS.

First off, if it's bigger than 32GB, I don't think XP will let you format it
as a single FAT32 partition.

Second, if you want to deal with AV stuff at -all-, NTFS comes in very
handy.  FAT32 can't handle files over 2GB; I have two movie files in
particular (footage from Hot August Nights in Reno, NV ;) that are over 12GB
each.  1hr each, completely uncompressed.

Third, you're probably not going to notice a speed difference between the
two.

Wrong.  My 80GB drive is split into a 25GB partition for Win98 & 55GB
partition for XP.

If you're only *** on this machine, I wouldn't bother with NTFS.
FAT32 is lots less hassle & works just fine.

Not much hassles to NTFS.  Just format it and that's it.  Don't need to use
all the features if you don't need too.

The only "problem" I have with NTFS is that Spinrite does not
support it, If Gibson would fix that problem then all my drives would
bet NTFS.
OTOH if anyone knows of a program that lets you "see" and fix the
problem like spinrite then let me know.

How did you format and partition them, though?

Fat16 (win95 orig) had a 2 GB limit.  Fat32 is something like 100 terrabytes
or some ungodly number!

I have 2 80 gig drives, 1 at NTFS(C) and 1 at Fat32(D).  Good thing about
NTFS is no more scan disks when you do a hard reset and formatting your 80
gig drive in NTFS can be done in 2 seconds while with fat32 it'll take an
hour.  Good thing about Fat32 is you can access your files with a startup
disk in case your hard drive fails...(fails in a way that won't boot the OS
but will boot with a Startup disk enough for you to backup any important
files before it dies for good.

As drives get bigger, fat32 becomes less attractive.
