3dfx vs direct3d.....help

by David Hensle » Thu, 07 Oct 1999 04:00:00

Recently upgraded to a 233mmx, added a Diamond Monster Fusion video card,
Nascar 3 runs pretty well in 3dfx, but when I try to run it in direct3d, it
locks up when I try to go to any track.  I just want to do a side by side
comparison.  The movie looks a lot better in direct3d, just wondering if
everything else will look better too.  I have installed a second version,
set up the shortcuts for d3d, didn't make any difference, also changed the
ini file, same thing.  Any ideas?  Thanks in advance.

Stick with 3dfx/Glide, that is what I always use and have very small
problems getting game to run. My other card is a 16MB TNT AGP
card and I only use it for 2D winbloze stuff.

Funny, the TNT cards are very good cards and run both D3D and OpenGL quite
well.  Maybe not top notch anymore as they are a generation behind at least.

Anyways, with a Diamond Fusion [its a 3dfx Banshee chipset based board] use
Glide, and generally on any 3dfx chipset based graphics card, as it will for
the most part run faster than D3D or OpenGL will on those cards.

Also make sure you have the latest drivers from 3dfx for the board and the
correct DirectX version or a higher version.

You'll find some comparisions at:
http://www2.dicom.se/peter/compare1.jpg
http://www2.dicom.se/peter/compare2.jpg
http://www2.dicom.se/peter/comparesmall.jpg
(These were done on my Mac at work, hence the window styles etc.)
http://www2.dicom.se/peter/comparesmall.jpg is just a side-by-side
comparision of the car texture.

BUT... the story doesn't end there, because Antti Markus Peteri is
using a TNT2 and as you can see from _his_ screenshots, he gets much
better D3D texture quality then I do. Have a look at
http://www.tol.oulu.fi/~midpro/comparison.html
(The "your 3Dfx" he's refering to is my previous shot)

We never really compared settings/drivers etc. But I use a CreLab
TNT2u, Detonator 2.08, MipMap set at 0, method set to Bi-linear,
detail set to Best image quality, Anti-alias in h/w off. The only
thing I haven't tested yet is "Don't filter stretched bitmaps".
Hmmm...

Antii, you there?

My opinion on this? Crappy D3D programming by Papy.
