LWFF and Serial Port

by BRH » Wed, 26 Jan 2000 04:00:00

After reading the comments here and on Allison Hine's site regarding the
LWFF wheel, I'm thinking of picking one up.

One thing that I haven't seen covered is the relative merits of running
it thru a serial port vs USB.  (From what I've read, it does not connect
to the gameport, correct?)  I know that USB would be better, but I'm
running Windows 95, so that's not an option.

Is anyone running it thru the serial port, and how is the performance?
Better yet, has anyone made a comparison between running it thru serial
vs running it thru USB?  Or can someone point me to a website with such
a comparison?

Of course, my main focus of all this is to use it with GPL.

Thanks.

LWFF and Serial Port

I've got a LWFF run thru the serial port... I've got a PII 400, 128 Meg o
RAM, a Voodoo3 3000, and a soundblaster live value. I didn't notice a bit of
frame-rate drop, still at +36fps in GPL. The forces are great and I'd
reccommend it to anyone willing to listen. Get it NOW!

LWFF and Serial Port

Think again. On my (ageing) system it made a huge difference. LWFF on the
serial port was much worse than my old wheel on the game port. But USB was
definitely better than the game port! Because GPL is my main game too, I
upgraded to W98SE for this purpose. Never regretted it, the rest of the
system suddenly worked much better too, especially online.
If you have the latest version of W95 it should be possible to use USB, but
don;t set your hopes too high. Have a look at www.wingmanteam.com for more
details and a W95/USB patch.

Good luck,
Leo

My LWFF is hooked through the serial port - I'm running Win98, but I have a
Celeron 400 (oc'ed to 450) on an old LX motherboard, and I don't have the
actual USB ports, just the connection on the motherboard.  I've had
absolutely no problems with it, and can't recommend it strongly enough.

Been running the LWFF through the serial port for a few weeks a have had no
problems at all. Very steady, no drop in frame rates and impressive ff
effects.
