Need4Speed II SE graphics prob

I'm running N4S II SE on an AMD K6, 350 mHZ, 64k ram,fully installed (100
meg) without 3Dfx. Everything looks great, runs great--- for a while.
Apparently at random, the screen will turn what looks to be "color
negative"--- reminds me of high school days and experiments with
hallucinogens. After the race is over, things return to normal. EA tech
support had no effective solutions thru e-mail.
I believe there might be a connection to the CD-rom drive. I have noticed
that I can load the game, run a race of 4 laps without trouble, but the next
race the screen will "turn acid" on me. Also, if I run an 8 lap race, I
might make 6 or 7 laps before it happens. The CD-rom drive is never active
when this occurs. Sometimes a major shunt on the track will precipitate the
change.
Once I get the CD-rom spinning again, I'm ok for another short race.
Anyone have any ideas?
