Just a shot in the dark here -- Have you turned off all background programs
(except Systray and Explorer)?  If so, try re-installing after turning all
background programs off.

Good Luck.

First patch the game to v1.2.  I 'beleive' the patch is located on the
cd.
if not, try www.papy.com.  Then make sure you have up to date drivers.
the 3dfx drivers released in November are very good.

Had the same problem... if I tell what it was... you won't believe me! It
was the IRDA (ifrared adapter for cellular phone) when it was enabled GPL
was trying to open it as a modem... and was*** on the opening screen...
hope that helps...(probably not!)

There's a "Beginners Guide to GPL" which lists a whole series of patches you
can make:

    http://www.slottweak.com/gplintro.htm

However, it omits to mention the most important one of all: the 3dfx cards
all have a bug in them when it comes to changing screen modes, in that they
corrupt the texture memory or crash.

George Smiley has written a patch that will fix this by preventing mode
changes, which has the bad side-effect of making the menu screens too small,
with pointer trails appearing at the bottom-right, but the good side-effect
of making the game work.

Sadly I can't remember where on the internet this is located, but I think
the file is called "Glide2x" or something like that.

The patch is at GPLEA in the utilities  www.gplea.org

Also should do the V1.2 patch from www.papy.com
