NR2K2 on line problem losing connection

by R Keatin » Wed, 18 Dec 2002 11:01:53

I am on a dialup connection (no cable/DSL available here) and think it is
set up as good as it is going to be.  Here is the problem: at times while
racing, the on line status bars will start growing and getting red.  After a
while, my connection to that server drops due to latency or quality being
too high.  Once this happens, I can't connect to any more races.

I have an external modem and can see the line is alive and the send light is
flashing.  If I get out of NR2K2, I can't even ping anything!  Although the
line is up, the connection is worthless.  The only way to recover is to
redial into my ISP.

I use the following, but they are turned off for racing; Zone Alarm firewall
and McAfee virus scan.  I run Wingman Profiler, but nothing else is running.
System is a PIII 800 Mhz with Windows ME.  Not sure when this started
(didn't always happen).  I don't know if it is on my end or with the ISP.
This does not happen when on line unless I am racing.  I averages about
every 2 to 3 races where a race is the usual 10% length.

Ideas?
Thanks,
Russell

I don't have any specifics, but here's my guess what is happening.  You
have a v.90 56k modem.  One of the 'features' of v.90 is to keep searching
for the best connection speed.  So every now and then it will resend
connection info trying to either get a faster speed, or throttle things back
if there's too much line noise(or other speed impediments.)
What the GPLer's found long ago was that 33.6 connections are constant.
The older protocol does not hunt and peck for better bandwidth.  What you
connect at, is what you stay at.  This is a big benefit for Online racing,
especially Papyrus online racing because it is so dependant on Predictor
code.
So dig through your modem docs and find the arcane phone command that
will force your modem to connect at 33.6 AND turn off error correction.
Good luck....I haven't messed with modems in so long I'd probably be more
hinderance than help.

Yep, and as soon as he does lower the baud rate and turn off error
correction, he will NOT be able to see any races listed.  Thanks Papy,
you morons.

I think that may not be the case for all users, Ryan, because I'm pretty
sure I was using settings as Dave outlines them in the early days of GPL and
VROC. Modem set to a fixed speed of I think 28.800, and turning _software_
error correction off.

Although I have to admit it's been a few years since I've used a modem, so
my memory perhaps isn't fully up-to-date.

I have my modem speed set to 2800.

Jake is correct, if I turn error correction off, it takes to long to
download the list or races and I never see them.   There is a time limit on
how long you have to download the list or races and with error correction
off I can't get the list in time.  After the timer expires the list starts
downloading again.  Therefore it never can finish.

If  Papy. would allow us to set that timer, I'd be ok.  If there were less
races listed I'd be ok.  If my phone line was better I"d be ok.  Too many
ifs :(.

Hm, I just dropped my Sportster back to V34, connected at 33.6, and
grabbed the race list fine.  I'm not denying you're having a problem,
but I don't see it with my equipment.

Another alternative to keeping the modem from constantly renegotiating
speeds is to keep using v.90 but force it to connect at a more stable
speed.  For instance, if you're getting 52k initial connects but the
connection is unstable, most modems will allow you to use an init
string to force it to connect at say 48k instead, which should provide
better stability and fewer renegotiations.

Russel,

are Jake and you talking about the racelist in WinVROC? Are you aware that
neither VROC nor WinVROC got anything to do with Papyrus and that both are
completely private 3rd party efforts?

Anyway, I only said to Jake that it's not a prob everybody has. I do think
though that few people have it, as none of the guys I know ever reported
this. Have you tried to find out what technically happens that causes this
to happen?

There is a 30 second timeout on downloading the Race list from Sierra.com.

If the race list size is greater than the that your connection can download
in any given 30 seconds, then NR2K2 will never display the race because it
re-requests the race list after 30seconds. The race list will not appear
until it reduces to a size that is downloadable within the 30second window.
