There is a 30 second timeout on downloading the Race list from Sierra.com.

If the race list size is greater than the that your connection can download
in any given 30 seconds, then NR2K2 will never display the race because it
re-requests the race list after 30seconds. The race list will not appear
until it reduces to a size that is downloadable within the 30second window.

NR2K2 on line problem losing connection

Achim,

This is with NASCAR Racing 2002 Season on the Sierra/Papyrus servers.  I've
never dealt with VROC or WinVROC.

I force my modem to 28000 with a command to the modem.  Even if my modem was
re-negotiating speed, I don't understand why it would lose the connection,
and never re-gain it not even to allow a ping to any machines unless I hang
up and dial in again.

Any recommendations for what to look for when this happens?  Anyone know of
diagnostic software that could at least tell if a problems was on my end or
with the ISP?

Russel, normally, disabling re-negotiation should be faster, as it prevents
your modem and its counterpart from spending time on trying to find a faster
or slower connection speed from time to time. Likewise for software error
correction. Disabling this should reduce your latency and increase your
download speed a tad. IP header compression I think should be ON btw, and
likewise _hardware_ error correction (only software error correction needs
to be off).

The prob is, I haven't used a modem for racing for ~5 years, so my memory is
a bit dim.

The first thing I'd look for is the list of commands my modem has. Because,
AFAIR, my old 3com/US Robotic did have a command to prevent renegotiation at
higher speeds as well, albeit not with all speeds/protocols. I think there
was a command where one could tell both yours and the other modem to not
negotiate.

I'd also check my data buffers for the incoming and outgoing data streams,
are they to small, or too large. Windows defaults seem to be good if your
modem is connected to serial, I don't know how it works with USB.

In core.ini there's a line

bcast_listserv_req_freq=0.000000         ; Request race list frequency

I don't know what it does, I'm not even sure it refers to the Sierra.com
racelist, but what happens if you set that to a different value, like
60.000 - does this perhaps decrease the frequency at which the racelist is
requested to one entire minute, giving your system more time to download it
before a re-request is made? I haven't tried it and don't know, maybe it
needed to be set to 0.50000 to achieve this (=try half as often), I don't
know how it works, but it could be worth a try.

Apart from that, I'd set

bcast_ping_disable=0
bcast_send_disable=1
bcast_send_freq=16.000000                 careful, don't know what's
possible max
                                                                    but
higher means less bandwidth taken
disable_icmp_checking=1
disable_ipx=1
ignore_net_read_errors=1
ignore_net_send_errors=1
net_use_mdm_bandwidth_for_tcp_ip=1

I'm guessing here a bit, I haven't dealt with these issues since I got
broadband, so please treat all this with a grain of salt.

Good luck!

im using an ELSA microlink 56k fun modem over a series conn in winXP, and i
get something very similar to the problem described.

im in a race, and every now and again, the tx/rx light on the front of the
modem will just glow red instead of flashing red (this can happen when im
browsing the internet too over either of my 2 different ISPs), and i wont be
able to recieve/send or ping anything, my connection to any servers is
severed, i cant race or browse, and i have to log off and back on again to
resume anything.

I don't know what that is Alex. Could be a failed retrain, but I'm not sure.
I remember there was an issue with Windows back in 1998 where sometimes when
leaving GPL you couldn't use the connection anymore, and had to shut it down
and reopen. Something within Windows' online modules had frozen into that
state, but it's all been too long ago for me to remember - sorry.
