Video card? + ICR2

Video card? + ICR2

I'm a Mac user but am trying to upgrade my girlfriend's computer (Compaq)
for her. She has a P90. I would like to stick in a new CPU but also a
video card.

Which cards are supported by ICR2 rendition and does N2 support any
cards in the same way. Also, how does one get the rendition version of
this game (or, if applicable, N2)? Do you have to buy Sierra's card to get
it?  I race ICR2 and Nascar on my mac and we're gonna hopefully do some
head-head ;. Plus I'm hoping to investigate the world of online racing
once I get her all sorted out.

Thanks for any help you can give.

Sorta a Bill Gates in reverse?! <G>

Any of the Verite based 3d cards will support ICR2 Rendition and N2.
However, there are only 2 cards that I am aware of that come bundled
with the Rendition version of ICR2 (BTW: N2 is rendition ready right out
of the box).  And they are Intergraph's Intense 3D 100 and Sierra's
Screamin' 3D.  The latter seems to be a tad faster and has better
support with BIOS and driver updates.  They are both going for about the
same price.  Also the Sierra card has a better "game" bundle with it.

Not to rain on your parade or anything like that...  I don't have
first-hand experience (no Mac), but it seems that I remember people
saying that you couldn't run the PC and Mac versions of ICR2 and/or
NASCAR1/2 head-to-head (via modem or null modem) with *each other* (PC
to Mac or vice versa).  I could well be totally wrong about this, but
best to check it out now.  Good luck...

Before you send me UCE, I know what you're thinking...  Did he complain
to five or six postmasters last month?  Now, you must ask yourself one
question: "Do I feel lucky?"  Well, do you, punk?

Canopus, Sierra, and Intergraph bundle ICR2-3D with their cards.
N2 is Rendition Ready, but isn't quite up to the standards set by
ICR2-3D, but is still a very cool sim.

You should be able to connect PC to Mac using ICR2, but the 3D
version may not be the one to use (Win95 I think).

Cheers!

Good to hear that.  I just checked Michael Carver's excellent ICR2
FAQ.  Searching on "Mac", one note of interest that I found
(re:patches) (note the last sentence)...

:   indycar2_patch.hqx (Mac version only!)
:      374k, posted on 10/21/96
:      ftp://ftp.sierra.com/pub/macintosh_patches/indycar2_patches.hqx
:      Adds support for Mac Thrustmaster T2 pedals. Game will now
:      automatically unlock the modem configuration file. Fixes
:      crashes during multiplayer racing (system crashes, that is... a
:      mere patch can't help your driving). Allows Mac version of game
:      to sponsor multiplayer matches which include users of the
:      Windows/DOS versions of the game.

The Canopus comes with their 3DSpex (3D glasses) and some games
utilizing same (I think Whiplash might be one).  For us sim-heads,
either Intergraph or Sierra w/bundled ICR3D is the way to go.  Or
perhaps wait a few months and see what the next generation brings...

Yes I understand that a new generation of rendition chip is due out in a
month or two. So it will be wise to wait for the better performance or at
least the cheaper prices on the current cards.

Cheers
