ICR2 Rendition Video Card Recommendation

by Kevi » Mon, 28 Dec 1998 04:00:00

I am looking for some information and recommendations for a video card
for the rendition version of ICR2.  I actually purchased the CART
version which comes with the rendition version included.

I have run the sim for quite some time in 2D and now want to explore the
3D rendition version.

I purchased a new computer a number of months ago.  It is a Dell XPS
D266 and it comes with a Velocity 128 AGP video card.  From what I have
read this won't help with the Rendition version of ICR2.

Can I purchase any version of  V1000 Rendition (PCI) card and have it
coexist with may Velocity 128 AGP card?

I don't have any other sims and I am therefore not unhappy with my
existing card.  All I want to do is add the rendition capability.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Kevin

Kevin,

you can use two video cards under '98. you would need two monitors.
you could probably do a monitor hot swap after launching the game. I don't
reccomend it tho
I really like having dual monitors anyway. great big desktop :-)

...

No, all Rendition cards that I'm aware of are 2D-3D, and would
replace your existing card.  You would lose a lot of performance in
Windows 2D compared to your current card.  :(

Of the Rendition cards, the V1000s are the best choices to run
ICR2/CART (the V2x00 cards suffer from minor incompatabilities).

The upcoming 3rd generation Rendition cards *might* have 3D-only
capabilities, but I'm pretty sure they'd be even more incompatible
with ICR2/CART.

There is no easy choice.  The Rendition version of ICR2/CART was
great in its day (2 years ago), but most folks have moved on.  :(

Sorry if it sounded that way.  I enjoyed ICR2/CART on my P133/V1000
(I built that system in Nov '96 *explicitly for* ICR2-3D), and I thank
Papyrus for their Rendition support (N2, SODA) that made that a viable
platform for two years.  For those folks who still enjoy it, that's
great.

But I got GPL three months ago (the day it came out).  And built a
new PC (C300A/Thriller3D) to enjoy it.  It's got amazing handling,
dazzling graphics, online racing, etc.  But probably the biggest thing
for me is the precise recreation of that world in miniature.  It looks
right, it feels right, it drives right (all IMO :).  It has, for me,
reawakened some of the wonder that I felt when I experienced my first
racing sim on the PC, the original IndyCar Racing.  After experiencing
that, you may imagine, it is hard to go back to older sims (for
instance, while I've bought most of Papyrus' sims, I'm in no hurry to
buy NR99).  OTOH, as a CART fan, I really look forward to ICR3/CART2
with the GPL engine.

Second, as far as the factual validity of my statement, count up
the messages here on RAS devoted to ICR2/CART.  Compare it to message
counts for GPL or N2/NR99 or F1RS/MGPRS.  I think that supports my
statement.  You and others may enjoy it, but "most folks"...

So, back to the question at hand.  Would *you* recommend this guy
take out his new AGP card and spend $50 or so for a V1000 to run
ICR2/CART?  If he's disappointed (which he may be if he's seen GPL
running at 800x600x16 or higher), he's out $50.  If he likes it, then
he has to compromise between ICR2/CART Rendition support and
everything else (Windows 2D).  If he gets a faster Rendition card
(V2x00), then ICR2/CART is compromised.  Not an easy choice...
