Sorry if it sounded that way. I enjoyed ICR2/CART on my P133/V1000
(I built that system in Nov '96 *explicitly for* ICR2-3D), and I thank
Papyrus for their Rendition support (N2, SODA) that made that a viable
platform for two years. For those folks who still enjoy it, that's
great.
But I got GPL three months ago (the day it came out). And built a
new PC (C300A/Thriller3D) to enjoy it. It's got amazing handling,
dazzling graphics, online racing, etc. But probably the biggest thing
for me is the precise recreation of that world in miniature. It looks
right, it feels right, it drives right (all IMO :). It has, for me,
reawakened some of the wonder that I felt when I experienced my first
racing sim on the PC, the original IndyCar Racing. After experiencing
that, you may imagine, it is hard to go back to older sims (for
instance, while I've bought most of Papyrus' sims, I'm in no hurry to
buy NR99). OTOH, as a CART fan, I really look forward to ICR3/CART2
with the GPL engine.
Second, as far as the factual validity of my statement, count up
the messages here on RAS devoted to ICR2/CART. Compare it to message
counts for GPL or N2/NR99 or F1RS/MGPRS. I think that supports my
statement. You and others may enjoy it, but "most folks"...
So, back to the question at hand. Would *you* recommend this guy
take out his new AGP card and spend $50 or so for a V1000 to run
ICR2/CART? If he's disappointed (which he may be if he's seen GPL
running at 800x600x16 or higher), he's out $50. If he likes it, then
he has to compromise between ICR2/CART Rendition support and
everything else (Windows 2D). If he gets a faster Rendition card
(V2x00), then ICR2/CART is compromised. Not an easy choice...

nothing to be frightened of, and no limit, any fool could get into
a motor car and racing would not exist as a sport." -- Jim Clark
