That would be the Tyrrell P34 (1976)  The main sponsor was ELF.  The car had
a 40% increase in front contact patch, 34% more break pad pressure on 26.5%
more disk.  The smaller wheels with their lower drag due to the upper
surface spinning against the airflow were in effect worth 10=15bhp for free.
The front tyres were 10" in diameter and 9" wide, made by Goodyear.  The car
was powered by a Cosworth DFV, 3-litre giving 465bhp.  it weighed 575kg
giving a laden BHP/ton of 618.

It did have 6 wheels, 4 in front and 2 in back.  It was a Tyrell (I think
the designation was a P34 or something like that)and was driven by Jackie
Stewart.  Tyrell's sponsor back then was ELF and they were dark blue with
white trim.

I really can't remember it being wildly successful or a dog either.  As I
recall it was pre-ground effects and the theory was that by using small
front wheels and tires they could reduce the frontal area but they needed
four tires for the contact patch area so the thing didn't push like a pig.

I thought the Drivers were Scheckter and Depailler, who finished third and
fourth respectively in the driver's championship.  Tyrell cant third in the
constructor's championship although the P34 was only used for about the last
two thirds of the season.

Gosh, Matthew! Could you be more specific? LOL! Great facts!

And watching Patrick Depailler throw those six wheels from Armco to Armco as
he appeared to make mid-air transitions coming off the first turn lap after
lap in Long Beach was one of the highlights of my days in college. The
thrill of Formula One was enhanced by the fact that my transcontinental
flight from Atlanta to Long Beach and accommodations were free! It seems
that I had a job interviewing trip with Chevron Oil in San Francisco and,
curiously, I discovered that it was actually more inexpensive for Chevron to
fly me to SF via LB than to fly me direct. Oddly, my trip coincided with the
LBGP. How'd that happen? hehe.

Hey guys,

Im hoping one of you F1 fans can help me out.   Im trying to find out
the make of the F1 cars from back in the early 70s I believe that had 2
front tires on each side.  I remember having a die cast model of one of
these when I was kid. (Im 28)  Very faint memory but I believe it was
blue and it was an ALF or something to that effect.

As you can tell my F1 history is not that great at this point <VBG>

Any help to the name of the teams, manufacturers, drivers, years, etc
would be greatly appreciated!

You can see a rather poor picture of it here ( http://surf.to/gzorbas ) if
you look in the "pictures" page for the P34.  I liked best the neat little
window in the side of the monocoque, which enabled the driver to see the
rearmost set of front tyres.

Thanks guys!   I found alot of item... I appreciate the info =)     I found
a few models on EBAY as well.  LOL

The main reason I was interested was because it is the first car I can
remember that I had as a child.  I was raised around racing... mostly
NASCAR.   However,  I always had die cast cars, models, slot tracks, etc.
from all sorts of different venues.

One of my earliest memories is of having a die cast model of the P34 and a
Bright Red 911.   Must have been around 1975 or so when I was like 4.  ROFL

Stewart never drove the P34 in a race, although he did take one out for a
test. He retired in 1973 and the car appeared 2 years later.
If memory serves correctly, Depallier was the other driver.

Try here for the absolute best model you will find of the P34. Very cool
stuff. Don't forget to check out the Lotus 49 as long as you're there.

It was the Tyrrell P34 which raced for the first time in 1976. In that year it
won the Swedish GP and Tyrrell was runner-up in the Constructors Cup. That
year, it was painted blue and sponsored by ELF, the french oil company. The
nex year, it was much less successful. Then it was blue and white and
sponsored by the First National City Bank (FNCB). By the way, it was powered
by the Ford Cosworth DFV engine.

The model was by Bburago (Italy) in 1:16 scale. They made both types (and a
lot of other beautiful 70s F1-cars)

Nowadays, Minichamps, Quartzo (Vitesse Group) and BBR have a model in 1:43
scale

Greetings, Han Monsees
