Hello all,

I need a bit of input from you guys since there are many Europeans and
individuals outside the states who might have some great input.

I have a small library I have begun with Motorsports literature and a
few videos.  In terms of literature, I would appreciate it if any of you
out there are knowledgeable of some of the 'classics' in terms of
motorsports history.  This could be driving instructions, history, etc.
Im in the US and I have most of the American sector wrapped up in terms
of NASCAR, CAN-AM, TRANS-AM, CART, etc. but must admit I know very
little about the history of F1 racing.

As a GPL lover I shamefully bow my head ;)

Id also like suggestion on any videos other than In-Car, Grand Prix and
Le Mans.  I thought I heard someone mention "Ronin"?  or something to
that effect.  Forgive me if this is a name or title I misspelled.

Please respond to the following email or you can post here.

Id appreciate any input as I am putting together quite an extensive list
in spreadsheet form.  Publisher, Publishing date, Title, Author, and
ident number are appreciated.  Ive done most of the normal research
through Amazon.com, Barnes and Noble.com, Motorbooks, etc.

Thanks in advance.

Jeez man, you got a lifetime to spare?
As an overview to European racing, you could try to hunt down a copy of the
BBC video called The power and the Glory. This was a 13 part (7 1/2) hour tv
series originally. If you go to the Duke site, they have all the  FOCA F1
seasons on video back as far as 1980. There are also many 70's reviews. Many
of the earlier races are captured on film but tend to be in the form of
manufacturer promotional films.

Reading material:- Get a subscription to Motor Sport and Autosport if you
can. The former always has fascinating historical content like the stuff
mentioned in another thread here. I always buy the Autocourse Annual,
probably the backbone in any F1 Fan's library. I'm always on the lookout for
early copies but be prepared to spend big bucks for pre 80's copies. There
are literally thousands of publications out there and it's hard to seperate
the wheat from the chaff. Look out for authors such as Nigel Roebuck, Doug
Nye, Alan Henry, Christopher Hilton, Eoin Young and Alan 'Jenks' Jenkinson.
These guys all know their stuff inside and out.

Scott, this is not OT at all in this GPL forum <g>

I think you should see this site immediately:
http://www.ddavid.com/formula1/index1.htm

and/or contact Dennis David and a lot of knowledgeable others at the
excellent Nostalgia Forum of the Atlas F1 Bulletin Board:
http://www.atlasf1.com

You'll like it.

Bye,
Leo

It might not be classed as a "classic" but have a look at "The chequered
flag" by Ivan Rendall. It's a year-by-year history of the major
motorsports, from their beginnings in the 1890's though to the present
day. I've had a copy of it for about 5 years and still find out new
facts from it occasionally.

As for techniques etc, look for Ayrton Senna's "Principles of race
driving" which is a *very* informative read :-)

I picked up a copy of a book titled "the Century of Motosports" for my father
as a xmas present and it covers quite a bit of old F1 stuff (it gives
summarized histories of every major GP circuit).  Also if you can get a copy of
it (though probably VERY hard to come by) get the books titled Automobile Year.
They were printed annualy AFAIK going back to the 50s i believe.  I dont know
if they still print them but the old ones from the 60s go right along with GPL.

It's a good covering of the basics but it hasn't got that much depth. "The
Racing Driver" by Denis Jenkinson and "The Technique of Motor Racing" by
Piero Taruffi cover both theory and practice and also offer great
historical insight into the racing scene of the 50s.

Cheers,
Richard

Ronin is a great movie by the same director of Grand Prix, Frankenheim
is his name I believe. It has got one of the best chase scenes I've
ever seen. Not historic, but very spectaculair.

I'll mention Adriano Cimarosti's _The Complete History of Grand Prix Motor
Racing_.  Check it out at amazon.com.  A very good and beautiful volume.
Also, Joe Saward, _The World Atlas of Motor Racing_ (New York: Mallard
Press, 1989): nice, large-format volume was excellent track maps and
historical data on changes, etc.  That one's out-of-print, though . . .
