N4 sucks...or maybe I just need some advice...help!

by mrTV » Sun, 18 Mar 2001 03:58:18

Greetings......

Here's my system.....

P3 800
ATI Radeon 64meg
SB Live!

I've raced since N2...(not online, I don't know really how to connect, etc)

I installed N4, works great.

Here's my beefs, perhaps I'm not the only one experiencing this...perhaps I
am...but at this point, I'm ready to uninstall and fire it in the trash.

1) What's with your car barely gripping the track?
In N2 and N3...I had no problems with taking it easy till your tires
warm up, but at least the car held it's own on the surface. With this
N4...the f**ker starts to slide the second you hit the gas leavin' the pits.
Daytona and Tally seem fine....
I've read ad naseum that "it's realistic"...but I have a HARD time believing
that every track is basically an asphalt skating rink. The car's 3400 lbs
for cryin' out loud! I really think that PAPY should address this. After
all, it's a GAME, not a training tool to go drivin' at Darlington for shits
n giggles.

2) Where's all the set-ups?
With N2 and N3...you could download set-ups til the cows come home. I've
been able to find a few setups, but nowhere near the amout of authors and
sites.

2.5) Where's all the cars?
Jeez...I had a new car everyday to drive with N3. With N4, I get #83
Papyrus.  Someone point me in the direction of a real happenin' fictional
car site! PLEASE!

3) What's with this annoying pull to the left?
See the final sentence of question 1......

4) Why is SIM too hard and ARCADE too crappy?
Basically, I try SIM mode, and forget about it. Car slides all
over..even with a tweaked setup, etc.  I try ARCADE mode...and basically,
it's N3 sim at 95%. With ARCADE, your stuck with whatever setup it gives ya.
But the AI sure as hell whips your ass. Car still slides all over.
Again...PAPY should address this...make ARCADE mode mirror the SIM mode, but
adjust the following (a) grip the track like glue, or at least minimal
sliding (b) full race weekend options (c) adjustable AI (d) adjustable
player's car, but not full sim...basic tweaks to make it faster, etc.

I bought Nascar Heat, and was happy with it, but it was thrown out the
second I got N4 home. Now I'm beginning to think I should have kept it. I
would have missed Pocono and Indy, though......

    I'm not lookin' to trash N4...and I don't want a bunch of flamin'.   I'm
just hoping that I can get some advice to make N4  ENJOYABLE to this
medium-skilled racer.  It's a GAME I WANT to enjoy, not get frustrated with.
Leave the frustrating real-life stuff to the guys that do it for a living
every Sunday.......

Thanks all......I appreciate any help posted here......

N4 sucks...or maybe I just need some advice...help!

by George Lewi » Sun, 18 Mar 2001 06:58:39

Hi Tony,

The reason the tires are sliding all over the place is the sheer
amount of horsepower.  Driving a racecar is not hard, but it isn't
like driving a street car either.

N4 has just made that part of the car more realistic...

As for the setups, they'll appear in time.  Rodney Arndt has a GREAT
setup guide available on the internet that is worth checking out.  If
you're willing to take the time it takes to learn how to set your car
up, you'll NEVER need a setup from anyone ever again.  However, you
can go to Black Hole Motorsports website. they have some N4 setups.

The pitwagon is a good place to pick up some cars...

If you need the URLs, let me know.  I'm not on the system with the
links at the moment, I apologize for that.

I have never tried arcade mode in any of the Nascar Racing versions,
so I have no way of helping you out there...

You didn't mention your wheel and pedals - what kind do you use? If
you don't have wheel/pedals, it's a good idea to get some!

Just run some practice. I have been racing since it was released. I have no
problem with grip, Car feels completely under control. I also don't even
notice the pull to the left unless I let go of wheel.

SimRace

N4 sucks...or maybe I just need some advice...help!

by SimRace » Sun, 18 Mar 2001 04:53:58

The tires are "slicks" and you're going tons faster than on your local
freeway. I think Papy is right on the mark with the realism. Unless you have
a small car yourself, it most likely also weighs more than 3400 lbs.

The game is new, give it time, there will be thousands out there in a month
or so. Plus, this is the first substantial upgrade to the garage and it
added numerous settings. Guys are still learning things like shock rebound
and compression, track bar, brake bias etc.

See answer above, insert "they also updated the paint shop"

That annoying pull to the left is the reason I would most likely beat you at
the track in question. (Pull isn't present in stock setups at shorter
tracks) .Its the result of the camber, tire pressure, and weight balance
setup to produce solid left hand turns, at speed, in the corners. The guys
that are tweaking the steering linearity and/or setup to get rid of it are
slowing down in the process.

SIM is not too hard. It is as real as is available for now. The real WC guys
talk about patience, and now you see why. I don't ever play arcade so I
can't comment there. The AI is admittedly the worst facet of this current
release. I almost exclusively test alone and race online so it isn't that
big of deal to me.

I think that this SIM shouldn't even have arcade mode, IMHO. But I guess
there are folks out there not really serious or *** that may find a use
for it.

 >     I bought Nascar Heat, and was happy with it, but it was thrown out
the

Bought Nascar Heat, tried it once and quit until the patch came out. Tried
it again then uninstalled it. Too pretty, no online implementation (worth
mentioning).

Sounds like you are looking for an arcade type game rather than a sim. My
advice would be to stick with Heat, it seemed to be more of an arcade style
game to me (not a usable paint shop, very little adjustment to cars, worse
online implementation that Quake 1, blah blah, lol)
The only way you are going to get more skilled is to get some seat time. We
had a league practice at Darlington last night and I was turning laps on
order with the track record (Ward Burton 28.?? seconds, I am in the low
29's). 2 weeks ago, I spun everytime I hit the bump/dip going into turn 1.
It simply takes patience and some practice.

Best of luck to you, keep trying and I think you'll see that it isn't as
hard as you think.

Hello.....

So far so good on the responses......

I forgeot to mention my controller situation.....here goes....(perhaps
this is my problem)

    I'm using a controller from InterAct called he "Vortex 3D". I don't
think it survived very long, but let me explain it.

It is a combo of a pad, wheel and flight yoke. It's an oversized pad,
with a ball-joint on the bottom, along with a digital/analog switch.
So, in the case of N4...I set up my controller as a "gamepad". Then I
switch to 'analog', and place it on it's base (connects to ball-joint) At
this point, I get smooth steering (analog) but turning the pad on it's joint
like a wheel. Buttons control the gas and brake.

It's a weird controller I admit....but damn, it seems to work fine.

Any chance that N4 "sees" it as a joypad, period?

    I'm willing to try a wheel/pedal combo....but which one is a good, and a
good value as well????

    Tony

P.S.    search for "InterAct Vortex 3D" on google.com and you'll see what I
mean.

P.P.S.   I'm not "scared" to play a game, or race a game pal....but it was a
nice, below-the-belt shot anyways......jackass

P.P.S.S.  Thanks to all those who are attempting to assist with constructive
remarks.

I'm a relative newbie at NASCAR and would enjoy learning more.... like, what are
"rookie stripes"? I gather from what I've heard that they are on the paint job?!

FWIW, I've got NASCAR 1999 and just got N4 about 2 weeks ago. N4 is a great
improvement IMHO. I particularly like how well the online works.

Thanks,
Don.

N4 sucks...or maybe I just need some advice...help!

Try www.team-lightspeed.com they have a series of guides for the sim,
including a link to Rodney Arndt's setup guide. Click on the N4 Guides at
the top of the page. The driving and individual track guides are
particularly helpful to your situation. Also it is one of the friendliest
forums out there with some very knowledgeable folks to give you a hand.
The implementation of the new physics engine (you might try a wheel/pedal
combo as well) is what's giving you the frustration and you are not alone.
While there are some issues that Papyrus is working on, if you spend some
time with the sim, I think you'll find your level of enjoyment will increase
dramatically.
There is already some very exciting online racing out there.
