GPL + Monster 3DII

Help Please.
I Just added a Diamond Monster 3DII (12MB) to my system, and when it works
it is absolutely brilliant, but..... it seems to have a mind of its own !!
Spec is :
Dell Dimesnion XPSR350
Pentium II 350MHz,
64MB,
Diamond Permedia 2, 8MB AGP
Turtle Beach A3D Sound
+ New Diamond Monster 3DII Voodoo2

Sometimes GPL doesnt even start up... I get the egg-timer, for about 4
seconds, then its as if something is running in the background, since all
the menu's are slow, and a Ctrl-Alt-Del will show either a "Papyrus Window"
or "gpl" or soemtimes both (I think).
Other times.... I get through all except the last green button to get into
the car.
Other times... I manage to drive, but when I try to Esc, Enter to go back to
the pits, all I get is a black screen.
I have tried all resolutions, but seems to make no difference.
Last thing I tried was downloading the "new" voodoo2 drivers from
www.3dfx.com  but this seems to be exactly the same.

This is going to sound crazy but I had a similar problem (every few
launches of GPL the program would just hang and I had to Ctrl-Alt-Del
and End Task) but the problem went away and never came back when I
installed DirectX6.  (I was using the DirectX that comes with Win98
before that.)   Just thought I'd mention that though it was probably a
fluke.

Thanks !
I came home this evening and tried again, after a lot of installing and
re-installing of drivers, and GPL works every time !!!
I reckon its after a cold-boot, rather than a "restart" ? - Mabye a
"Restart" from win95 is the same thing, but its the only logic I can see !

And by the way... GPL is excellent at 35.99 or 36 fps !! Its like a
different game ! wow.

Get the latest drivers from Diamond! The latest reference drivers are problematic with
GPL I think.
