Sim Questions

Hi,

I am now dumping my old P100 for a PIII 750 w/ 32mb AGP 4x graphics.

I really enjoyed what I could play of SODA on my old machine.  My
question is, what PC sim is most similar to GT or GT2?  I have slobber
over a PS, the game boxes, and the tv commercials, but could not bring
myself to by a PS for on single sim.  FYI, I did see EA's GT, but it
does not have nearly enough vehicles, or ones that I would like to drive
except for the M3.

Since a machine is on the way that can handle a realistic simulator,
what one gives you the most vehicle selections, esp comtomizeable
dealer-stock types and earned cash/qualification to progress to the next
level.  I suppose that is what I liked most about SODA.  You could do to
a truck what you imagine doing to a real vehicle, but never would
without sponsorship of some kind.

Thanks for the help,

tony

There is a service pak that allows 155 other racing cars, and
most of the newer racers have been hand built for the game, but not
too many of the kinda cars that are in the Gran Turismo series.  Soda
will work only in software mode on your new system, if you ran it with a
rendition vid card on your old system, you may be in for a shock. :)  If
you were already doing the fuzzy way then it should really smoke now.
i believe there are a couple of projects in the works that may give
you the GT feel on your computer, but I think the closest will come when
sega ports thier upcomming Dreamcast gt clone over to the pc.  If they
actually do some controller work instead of dumping the vid game's code
on us, it may be what you are looking for.

possible candidates for now

SCGT
Touring Car Challenge(Toca 2)
Grand Prix Legends(but it won't like your vid card)
Nascar3
Dirt Track Racing.  (the company that makes DTR is working on a Stadium
truck sim that looks like a modern updated version of soda.  Look for
that this summer??)

  what else folks?  Midtown Madness?

Wow.  Ton of info there, thanks.  My old sys has on-board video, w/ a
meg of ram.  Half hard wired, half plug-in!

I run SODA totally installed now, w/o the cd.  Is that what you mean by
software mode?  (lame question)  What's the fuzzy way?  Was the
rendition card you were referring to worthless or problematic?  Also,
why won't GPL like the new card?  Would there a need for 3-D accel?  The
card coming in the new Gateway is a 32MB nVidia? GeForce 256 Graphics w/
TV Out and DVI-D (to be totally freakin' exact).

One more lame question:  who makes SCGT, TOCA2, and DTR?

Geez, I sound like a damn kid in a candy store!  Just getting ramped up
on my vocab.

I played Midtown Madness on an in-store demo and liked it.  It's on my
buy list.  The graphics were cool, but is it accurate sim-wise?  The
in-car interface looked a little weak compared to NFS 1 and SODA.  MM
reminded me more of Steets of Sim City.

Hey, thanks again for your time and info.

Later,

tony

Software mode refers to the game being run without any 3D Hardware
rendering.
