Get them while they're hot! ;-)

I'm getting sleepy. Too much work, and things will be like this till
Sunday. But in the mean time I've put up a complete recompile and
update of Racer onto http://www.racesimcentral.net/

I never did release 0.3 officially, it was just to make X-mas. This
version is quite nice and a bit of updates from V0.2 (assuming you
missed v0.3):

- Configuration utility to avoid some *** notepadding into
various .ini files
- Different control sets; switch easily between controllers. Microsoft
FF wheel and generic joystick support included (no FF though yet,
hehe, don't have Aligning Moments yet).
- Drive around in Carlab and edit some parameters (although the
parameters seem a bit touchy and before you know it you'll fly off to
Mars, if only NASA could do it like that!).
- A track, originally from SCGT, converted to Racer, but ONLY for
TrackEd testing.
- Ehm, yes, TrackEd, allows some track importing in batch modes and
ofcourse immediate interactive viewing. The way it handles now is a
bit like cameras will be handled in the future (place-a-cam and look
around).
- A Ferrari car (was in v0.3 already). Improved version with MUCH
better lighting (the previous lighting was doubly negated, so it
looked really ugly). Smoothing and all that. It also handles better,
but damn, did I miss the shifting?
- An improved modeler which imports more WRL files, mainly still from
SCGT VRL2VRML files though. The ASE loader is what you need if you're
playing with Max.

Anyway, lots, and also quite a lot of information on the site. I plan
to explain the methods I use, like the way TrackEd is now culling
objects (it's really dead simple, a bit too simple, but for entrance
programming it's great).

Next thing on the list is driving on one of those VRML-type tracks;
some fast collision detection with the track objects so you don't sink
in.

Although communication is going on with the Pits about some help,
you're welcome to contribute SCGT tracks that can be distributed in
converted form (I mean, legally ok). And cars as well ofcourse, still
looking for nice distributable ones.

Now, if you don't mind, I'll go to sleep. Tomorrow a big day awaits
again. Thanks to PC's for being so incrrrredibly fast, even though
Windows will never let you notice it.

And oh, if you're still reading... if so, you probably d'loaded v0.3
as well. You'll need to redownload all apps, since the model format
was hugely modified (and improved mainly), so the v0.3 DOF files are
incompatible with the new ones (well, they won't crash IIRC, but they
will just be empty).

The main toy at this time is TrackEd. I plan to expand it soon to get
some camera positioning soon.

Enjoy the toys. Hopefully it will not crash TOO much on you. :)

I just downloaded it, but I get an error with a DLL (dinput.dll) which I
assume is because I have no joystick on my machine here at work.  Is there a
way to run it without a joystick?  It used mouse input before didn't it?

Yikes, I forgot the controlset files.
Included them with the Racer Exe now. Redownload that, install, and
you'll have the MSFF.ini and GENJOY.ini control files.

And no, on Windows you can't run without a joystick or wheel. The old
one used mouse input (as does the SGI version).

Sorry about the inconvenience, hope it works this time (I knew I
should have tested!).

Check QLOG.txt for messages. Given the LWFF, you would expect it to
run (although the other apps require *good* drivers instead of just
drivers that work with games).
I'll be in next week until thursday, after that I'll be skiing for a
week. I'll try to get a debug version up, so I can actually do
something with the protection fault messages (in that case, run the
debug version, mail me the GPF error message stuff and I can hopefully
see where it's crashing in the source, which might lead to easier
answers).

Also try the handy JoyStImm program to check if your controller is
supposed to be working. Note the MSFF wheel control set uses split
axis.
