Do 3dfx cards support Direct 3d or Open GL, as well as Glide.  Also with
N4 coming out this fall would it be a good idea to upgrade to a Voodoo 3
card.

I know they do D3D and Glide, of course, but I'm not sure about Open GL.  I
am a happy Voodoo 3 owner, and recommend it highly, especially since they
are bound to drop in price with the emergence of the Voodoo 5...On a Celery
550, GPL rocks with all graphics options (except driver arms, which I find
annoying) with my V3 AGP.

Yes they do, just not as efficiently as Glide.  Voodoo3 is good, prices
are bound to drop further soon.  Or if you can swing it, a V5 5500.

thus spoke:

They support OpenGL too, but not as well as Nvidia's cards. Nvidia has
full OpenGL drivers, but 3DFX has what they call Mini-GL drivers. I
haven't run a GL game since Quake though so don't see it as a big deal
anyway. V5 are supposed to get better GL drivers, but that remains to
be seen.

Newer Voodoo3 driver versions include a full OpenGL driver (ICD).

Well you only have to look at the V5 frame rates in Quake 3 Arena to see
that the V5 has OpenGL support as good as any card.  Also the V3 has full
OpenGL support and also plays Q3A perfectly well.

If you don't need a 3d card now, I would put off purchasing a card for
N4 until close to (or even after) the release of the game.  If you need
one now, it would be helpful to know what you are playing.

I agree with Micheal, you could get a V3 right now...but we have
no guarentee it will be stout enough to run N4.  Right now...it is a
perfect card for GPL, N99 and N3.  I am beginning to wonder about N4
though.  One point we may have overlooked is the 16 bit color mode.
Will 16 bit still look as detailed as the current crop of N4
screenshots, or will it be more in line with the graphics of N3.  If and
this is a BIG IF right now, cuz I don't know, if N4 runs great with N3
level graphics then I think many users will be pleased to stick with
their current V3 cards.  I do think tho...that if you want to truly see
N4 in all it's glory, the current 3dfx cards just won't cut it.  V5 5500
should be your minimum buying target.
Now with N4 supporting D3D and Opengl, one of the 'other' cards might
finally do well with Papyrus products..especially Matrox and the New ATI
cards might really smoke in N4.  Time will tell.  If you do NOT
absolutely need a new 3d card now...wait.  See what shakes out with
N4, GP3 and WSC.

I stand corrected. I do have a V3, but haven't played any OpenGL games
since Quake (which used a mini-gl port). I have read that their OpenGL
drivers are buggy though. but, I don't know from experience and I
guess all vid drivers are buggy to a degree.
