N2 3dfx question

by Hamm » Tue, 18 Aug 1998 04:00:00

I hope this is not duplicate of other questions, I don't intend
to post a laborous question.

I just got a new system, with a 3dfx card (Creative Voodoo 2 8mb)
and it also has a Diamond AGP card in it.  I happily loaded up N2
with the 3dfx patch, and it's cool.

However, I'm racing at Pocono last night and coming out of T3, I
get choppy frame rates.  Very choppy.  I was leading, no one in
front (but Rusty harrassing me vehmently from behind for 10
laps).

This is a PII400, Aesus mb, BX2 chipset with AGP... I thought you
could run with everything on?  I looked in the readme that came
with the N2 3dfx patch and can't find any details.

I am running under Win98 (regretfully) in full screen dos box,
just running NAS3DFX with no params (what are the params,
anyway?).

Can anyone point out my stupidity here?  I fully expected super
fast frame rates (foolishly?).   I'm pretty sure I'm doing
something stupid.  Thanks.

hehe.  Oh man, that's funny, I never checked that.  Because GP2
is limited to 25 max, I saw 25 in N2 and my pathetically weak
malformed brain figured that was max (i'm laughing at my idiocy
as I type this).  Thanks man.  I'll take a look.  Thanks fer the
tip.

I had this problem for a while and made it disappear by turning-off
anti-aliasing.
If you run it with a batch file, check to see if it has a line that looks
like:

SET N2FXAA=2

If it does, changing the 2 to a 0 will do many wonderous and incredible
things for your frame rate, tho it won't look -quite- as slick.

I think changing fps settings in the graphics options only works if you've
got details set on auto, otherwise it's ignored.

Please reply to the ng if this does actually do the trick for
you...it'd be nice to get some confirmation.

Also, I don't see an "x" in your email, BTW.

Hmmm...

In the regular and Rendition versions, the framerate setting determines when
the game turns off and on textures set to automatic.  If you set max at 30
fps, and min at 25 fps, say you have the track texture set to "Auto".  Then
when the framerate dips under 25, it turns off the track texture.  If the
framerate climbs to 30 fps (the MAX for N2 although I keep hearing people
state otherwise) then it'll turn the texture back on.

So it shouldn't really have an effect unless you're using automatic textures
in the 3dfx version either.  Not saying it doesn't, but if so it is working
much more like the control in GP2 than the other N2 versions.  But hey, I'll
give it a shot anyways (P-II/400, Voodoo 2).  Maybe they programmed this one
a bit different.

Ya, you're correct about the way the frame rate settings work,
they are the "Auto" thresholds only.  I tried it last night and
got pretty much no joy.  Even turning off some things is not
helping much.  I could see it if I was behind a bunch of cars,
but out in front it should be very fast frame rates.  I'm pretty
dissappointed.

Oh well, we'll have to wait for N3 for really fast frame rates, I
guess.

Since it's a very buggy patch made after the release of the game, you can't
do anything about it...

Try to run without the F2 Window... and at least disable anti-aliasing (make
it =1 or =0 in your *.bat files). Maybe try something about the low_texture.
There is no really big difference, and it's not noticeable compared to
high_texture

i tell you one thing  , nas3dfx, is still, much much better, than
original nascar racing
,man the code in that one was crazy, it was the first software i got
when i built my first system,(it is long gone now) and that sucker i've
seen on P100, p166 p200mmx
and never would that thing work smooth,
i think the software has run its course, being devoloped from long
existing code, back in the dos era,
we can only hope that sierra, is going to do something good with the
next one,
both cart racing and nascar
