You are running win 95 B... check in your control panel and under the
system icon you can tell what version that you are running if it says
4.00 4.50b you have a problem... it seems to be missing a virtual
device driver in win 95 b and wont let you run it from a window. You
will need to run it from dos with your sound card drivers loaded.
As I've pointed out before, my joystick works fine when running N2
through Win95 OSR2 (4.00.950 B).

I think I know what version of Win95 I'm using (with FAT32 enabled I
might add) as well as if my joystick works or not.

It is another one of the bugs in the game. I just started running it from
dos. Also when you run it from dos you don't get the critical error message
when the CD is not in. When you start it from Windows, you have to go back
to the control panel and reconfigure your joystick quite often before the
game will recognize it. I wish they had fixed these bugs before they
released it, but we were in a hurry to get it so they gave it to us like
this.

Just to clarify, I believe that this bug manifests itself in OEM "B"
versions (approx August of 1996) of Win95. MS apparently decided to
change the joystick drivers (perhaps the old ones were working too
well?) and something about the new ones broke our game.
(We didn't have an OEM "B" machines in the office to test against
before we shipped. Why? Because we had already bought our testing
machines and didn't have any reason to think that MS's new version of
Win95 would break us...)
Of course, we "wish" these bugs were fixed before release as well, but
one cannot fix bugs that one doesn't know about.
Avoiding the "critical error" message is as simple as running
NASCAR2.EXE (or REM ing out the line in the N2.bat file which
references the CD-ROM (for the movie)) I don't think it has anything
to do with the DOS/Win95 issue.

Care to venture a guess as to why my version of OSR2 is different? Oh
wait a minute... I forgot, I don't know what version of Win95 I have.
Maybe I'll have time to sit down and look at it after I figure out why
my VCR and microwave continually flash 12:00? =)

You've got an attitude problem!!! Let Papyrus take care of it, your
best bet is to ....Just leave it alone.

Seems to me they should be quite interested in my configuration, as I
seem to be the only one who has it working properly with OSR2.

That's exactly what Papy and I are trying to figure out. I'm using the
joystick port of my SB16, DirectX 3.0a, and the latest Microsoft
Sidewinder software (it replaces the joystick control panel). I did a
clean install of OSR2 (including USB support) and I'm using FAT32.

I just installed the Microsoft Sidewinder software on my system and the
joystick problems are gone! Download the software from Microsoft's web
site - file name is "swndr15.exe". I configured my wheel and pedals as
a 2-axis 4 button joystick. Then recalibrated in N2. Give it a try -
might work for any of you with the joystick problem.

Also, If MS did change the drivers to "break" N2, maybe it was
their response to MS explorer's "broken condition" ;-) ! If this
scenario holds true, MS should be releasing a "patch" soon. (Not
holding my breathe.)
